Klingon Helmets in new trailer

The Klingons in the new trailer look like they're wearing helmets and trenchcoats (the scene where Eric Bana walks out and stiff arms them). Is this some sort of nod to concealing their ridge-less faces?

I've been in the camp that the original Klingon look in TOS, as with so much else in Trek, is just a restricted TV budget. They've always had ridges; you just have to use your imagination. Enterprise and DS9 episodes notwithstanding, I hope the new movie doesn't bring in this most inside of jokes and lets the whole ridge/ridge-less issue die the death it should have thirty years ago with TMP.

Oh...wow. There's so many quick edits in here to go through.

And in typical Trekkie fashion we will beat every one of those edits into the ground.

I think this is Nero escaping from Romulean prison in the future, notice how his clothes seem to be rags - I don't think those are Klingons.

I don't know-- why would a Romulan helmet emulate the shape of a Klingon head? And I think I see the ol' Klngon goatees under the masks.

Abrams mentioned a Klingon sub-plot that had to be edited for time. Maybe Nero was in a Klingon prison?

Thing is - we don't know what the Romulean empire is like in the time period that Nero comes from - maybe the work of Spock lead to the Empire being taken over by *another* race and this is who those two people are?

Wow.... Think back... to the end of TNG... All Good Things...

"No more romulian empire"... The klingons invaded and took over in that future...

Exactly. I can't see any reason at all why these are Romulans other than 'they wore helmets in TOS'. :vulcan: Why would the Romulans put a stylised Klingon forehead ridge onto their helmets???

Well the last we saw of the 24th century, the Senate was killed by Shinzon, so that certainly doesn't do a government well.

I think they are klingons, based on the ridges on the helmets. Who knows which century...

Maybe they indeed did take over the Romulan Empire in a future. I mean, the last we know of the Romulans, they were without a senate, post Dominion War. The Klingons could have easily came in and took over...

Which would maintain continuity in the "Future tng timeline" future seen in All Good Things, as well as DS9 and Voy (evidenced by the use of the same uniforms), as well as NEM's events.

That would be interesting. Think about it...

Nero goes back to do something about kirk and spock because they both helped to end the romulan empire...

Kirk saves Picard in the future which leads to Shinzon. Spock leads the Rommies to piece in the wake is Shinzon's attack on the senate and opens the door for klingon invasion...

You go back and take out kirk, he doesn't help Picard, so no need for shinzon, and spock doesn't rise up with kirk in the ranks of glacatic notice to be in a position to negotiate piece on romulous...

I could see a story there.

Well it appears that he goes back to blow up Vulcan, so I'm assuming it's spock that he's after not Kirk.

Is it logical to suggest that after the events of Nemesis, the people of Romulus decided that Unification and/or peace with the federation wasn't such a bad idea?

The government leadership was gone, the military was discredited, and it was a federation ship which helped them...

I'd say, to quote a romulan, "there would never be a better time" for spock to push the agenda...

I think he's going after both of them. It's indicated that Nero is the one that destroys the Kelvin, which gives Kirk some Daddy issues. Kirk may have been the target, but survived, but ended up becoming a punk kid and didn't start his illustrious career. Nero missed his mark, but maybe have still been satisfied with the result.

Target two could be Spock-- but it also seems like the Enterprise is saving Vulcan. Why just kill Spock when you can kill them all-- that certainly ends any want or need for Unification.

Wait a minute - how about this.

The empire is invaded by the Klingons due to the events of reunification. Like any subordinated nation, some of the population work for their new masters as collaborators - so they wear wear the Klingon helmets to show their loyalty.

Nero, from his perspective, is the hero of the film - he's going to save the empire from this terrible fate...
