Gotta agree with that last post. Movie Kirk never feels like TOS Kirk to me; there were so many moments when I read the TMP novelization (pre-release) where I thought I knew absolutely how Shatner would play it, but I was disappointed when I saw the direction he did take, which was far from my expectation.
Movie Kirk has his moments (usually when he is mild), but my fave Kirk moment is definitely early TOS, when he tells Charlie Evans, "go to your quarters or I'll pick you up and carry you there." It is low and deadly and absolute. A few years later, I'm sure Shatner would have been sing-songing it, but he had it right early on. Movie Kirk feels a bit like a burnout at times, which, I guess given what he has gone through and sacrificed, might make a certain amount of sense, but I just don't like him much and I don't admire the movie character at all.
