Kirk To Gatt-"Where's The Hull Damage?" Gatt-"Major Hull Damage Capt"

Re: Kirk To Gatt-"Where's The Hull Damage?" Gatt-"Major Hull Damage Ca

Joseph Gatt says he's a human cyborg. My first thought watching the movie was that he was a jacked-up Bynar.

But even if he IS an android, perhaps they picked him up during the "Mudd incident"? AU Norman, reporting for duty.

I don't have the interview in front of me, but I remember saying something about his human-side/humanity serves as a firewall against people hacking the computers on something like that.

StarTrek.com: Now that the film is out, what's your take on Science Officer 0718? Is he humanoid? An android? Sentient? What's his purpose on the bridge?

GATT: The simple concept is that Science Officer 0718 is human, with cybernetic implants. He is NOT an android or robot of any kind. The rest is stuff that I've had to come up with, as an actor, to help fill in the gaps and play my role effectively. My main thoughts, while shooting, were that his main purpose on the bridge is augmenting the work of Spock and Uhura, mainly managing the science and engineering systems in the bridge.

StarTrek.com: How about the character’s connection to the ship’s computer via his cybernetic augmentation?

GATT: Technically, my humanity acts as a firewall against the hacking threat. Because I'm still a human, with a cybernetic implant, I can't be hacked. My humanity will always know what’s right and wrong and is always in control over the cybernetic implant part of me. This means that, even if there is a hacking threat to the ship’s main computer or to me directly, it won't get through the human firewall and the ship will always be safe. In the end, you guys know more about this universe than I ever will, and I'm hoping you will help me fill in this character’s details. Or maybe more will be revealed in a novel or another movie.

^ They kinda look like some of those new Bluetooth headphones. I forget the brand - some animal name. Parrot?

So essentially he is this dude:

Point?
I think the implication was supposed to be that the bald guy with a cranial implant in STID is an obvious ripoff of a bald guy with cranial implants who was in different movie from 30+ years ago. Or something like that.

To be honest, I only know who the other character is because the similarity in appearance and computer-interface function had been pointed out a few times before; I barely remember him at all from when I watched the movie in question on its original release. Did Lobot even have any lines, or are the similarities I mentioned above all there is to it?

My first thought when I saw him was that he was a reboot/redesign of a Bynar. Didn't even think about Lobot (unless you're in SW EU, that's how forgettable he is in ESB).

Re: Kirk To Gatt-"Where's The Hull Damage?" Gatt-"Major Hull Damage Ca

GATT is also the humanoid AI from the recent Cold Equations book The Body Electric. Maybe not the strangest Trek coincidence, but it's been bugging me since I first saw this thread.

My opinion is that Gatt should not have been in the film, period. Having an android even as a tertiary character runs contrary to the character focus of the Abrams films.
Even if the movie GATT/Science Officer 0718 isn't an android?

Not even then. For me, he's a distraction, which went nowhere from a plot perspective, and as others have pointed out in this thread, the awkward dialogue pulled some of us out of what was otherwise an impressive starship smackdown sequence. Give him some back story, and I'm golden, but no.

I didn't like Lobot either.

Re: Kirk To Gatt-"Where's The Hull Damage?" Gatt-"Major Hull Damage Ca

Why the f#@$! does EVERY BLESSED minute detail need explanation and a backstory?

I don't recall anything, ANYTHING in any universe that was held to such scrutiny. Hell, I had a Lobot action figure as a kid and that dude had no lines, a stupid blousy pirate shirt and I didn't know him from a stormtrooper. But damn, he could pilot the Millennium Falcon in a pinch if I needed him to.

If there ever was a post that served as a prime example as to the reason we need karma around here, it's this one.

Not every background actor with a line or every strange looking creature needs screentime wasted on giving it a background story unless said background story was central to the main story being told. Some times just having a cool looking character getting a line or two is more than enough. Don't fall into the TNG+ Era trap (and SW EU trap) of explaining every damn detail.

You sure you want to advertise that so loudly? :alienblush:

That's a bit like Bill Gates telling potential dates he's the King of Microsoft ;)

Hahaha!

Oops... :)

Like Bill Gates would have any problem getting dates if he were single, small penis or no small penis.

"I have more money than anyone else in the world."
"All of I sudden I find you strangely attractive."
