Kirk To Gatt-"Where's The Hull Damage?" Gatt-"Major Hull Damage Capt"

Lol. I just watched the scene where the Vengeance warps up on the Enterprise and attacks them blowing a hole in the side hull where the torpedoes were last seen in their launchers. Anyway, Kirk yells out "Damage Report". A redshirt yoeman (I guess) gets up and tells Kirk "We have a hull breach sir". Kirk walks to Gatt-2000 at his station and asks "Where's the hull damage?". Gatt looks at Kirk and responds "Major hull damage Captain" as Kirk walks by. I mean WTF lol, that is not what Kirk asked him. Maybe that thing on the back of the head shorted out or the writers goofed up and didn't catch it. Check it out below.

Gatt is hooked into the main computer, he was still trying to compile the damage report and could only give what he knew, major damage and still being assessed.

Re: Kirk To Gatt-"Where's The Hull Damage?" Gatt-"Major Hull Damage Ca

Would anyone even notice this if it was the computer that said it? I found it mildly funny.

But it is true that Gatt and the blond officer got a line that's a bit redundant, which might create the impression that they are there to pick their nose. Nothing wrong with their lines per se, but if you're going to let someone speak for the first and only time, if they repeat what's just been said, I would not hire them to work on my starship. And that's unfair.

He says "Major hull damage captain," and then we cut to more shots of the attack. It was not the end of his report, we just didn't see it in it's entirety.

Re: Kirk To Gatt-"Where's The Hull Damage?" Gatt-"Major Hull Damage Ca

Actually, bulkhead breach is not the same as major hull damage, so he did bring new information. Not that it makes that much of a difference. If I were writing, I'd given him something more to report, say “Major portion of starboard and aft saucer section hull missing, captain,” but then if I was, I'd probably still be wondering if the plot became too contrived when I added Sisko or when I added Janeway.

Re: Kirk To Gatt-"Where's The Hull Damage?" Gatt-"Major Hull Damage Ca

Hull damage was to the aft nacelle. Obviously.

Re: Kirk To Gatt-"Where's The Hull Damage?" Gatt-"Major Hull Damage Ca

Lt. Tawny Madison was off duty.

Re: Kirk To Gatt-"Where's The Hull Damage?" Gatt-"Major Hull Damage Ca

I just figured at that point the severe damage was limited to the torn open hull and that all or most major systems were still operable. Of course, as the attack continues and the Vengeance hits some critical systems that changes.

Either that, or he was just beginning his report and he was cut off by subsequent events.

Re: Kirk To Gatt-"Where's The Hull Damage?" Gatt-"Major Hull Damage Ca

I just figured that it was a flub in the writing, acting, and/or direction that nobody caught, just as it happens in many, many TV shows and movies (Trek and otherwise) anyway.

Still sounded funny, though. Gatt might not be done with his report, but Kirk appeared, at least for a split second, to turn away from him. Give the shot a couple more seconds and it would seem like Kirk might have walked away thinking, "God, you're useless, I already heard that there was major hull damage! I'm going to ask someone else!"

Regardless, I'm still happy that the Enterprise falling out of the warp "tunnel" sounded like a TNG/DS9/VOY warp flash.

"Look, I have one job on this lousy ship, it's stupid, but I'm gonna do it, Okay?"

This always puzzles me. Such a scene involves so many people and they do several takes. The actors alone: Sulu, the yellowshirt, the redshirt, the strange voice guy, Kirk, then the director, etc... Nobody notices that this piece of dialogue makes no sense?

What annoys me more is Sulu's "We're 200,000 kilometers from Earth." When exactly was he going to hit the brakes? And then when they cut to the exterior shots, they are in a close Moon orbit, which is a lot farther away.

I guess there are "flubs" in the entire film.

Yup.

Just re-calibrate your suspension of disbelief to conform to the reboot :)

Re: Kirk To Gatt-"Where's The Hull Damage?" Gatt-"Major Hull Damage Ca

Stop picking on Gatt, he's OUR LOBOT and we should cut him some slack.

Re: Kirk To Gatt-"Where's The Hull Damage?" Gatt-"Major Hull Damage Ca

I guess there are "flubs" in the entire film.
But can they be surmounted? Can these "flubs" be overcome, not by changing a film which is already made and a finished work, but by approaching it whole and as it is? That's the question.

 Your description reminds me of Classic Kirk - impatiently pacing from station to station looking for someone to supply the answer he so desperately needs. :)

Don't question the fallibility of the writers or they might just curse you out on the internet :) After all 'they' get to write the movies for a reason, we don't!

Re: Kirk To Gatt-"Where's The Hull Damage?" Gatt-"Major Hull Damage Ca

What has been lost in this thread is that Kirk does not, in fact, say, "Where's the hull damage?" He simply asks, "Where's the damage?"

I like you man, but that's not a fair assessment of what happened at all.

Re: Kirk To Gatt-"Where's The Hull Damage?" Gatt-"Major Hull Damage Ca

What has been lost in this thread is that Kirk does not, in fact, say, "Where's the hull damage?" He simply asks, "Where's the damage?"

His question to Gatt immediately follows the female crewmember telling him "Sir, we have a bulkhead breach!"

So, "major hull damage" is pretty much a "duh!" answer at this point. This line could have been fixed with something like:

"Major damage to Engineering, Captain!"
"Major lower-deck hull damage, Captain!"
"You're a major ass, Captain -- I quit!"
etc...
