Kirk Casting...

It's the end of August, just over two months before the start of shooting. How much longer do you think it'll be before they let the cat out of the bag concerning who'll play Kirk? I'm guessing mid-October, they're gonna want to milk it for all it's worth.

I agree. I wish, in a perfect world, they could sit on it until the first preview gets out, so we could all be surprised. And it would save months of having to listen to whining fanboys who think this thing is up to a vote.

I could see it being kept as the last major casting announcement -- after the other "regulars," villain (if so), and the major parts have been announced. Although October may be a bit late.

The longer they wait, the better the choice needs to be, IMO. For example, there's no reason to keep people in suspense for a long time only to have everyone go, "Who?" or, "WTF?" or even, "Eh," when the announcement is made. (Of course, some will do that anyway. You just don't want everyone doing it.)

I could be very wrong (probably am), but the longer we wait to find out who's playing Kirk, the more in the back of my mind I keep wondering how big a role Kirk really has in the movie compared to Spock. Wouldn't it be a surprise to everyone to see this so completely a Spock-centric story that young Kirk perhaps appears in only the last half-hour or so of the movie?

When the character is actually cast, the news will leak out within days.

Actors don't (usually) live in glass jars. No matter how hush-hush they agree to be they have managers and agents (who find ways to let slip that one of their clients has scored a big part). If they're working steadily they have co-workers and other contacts in the business who know what they're auditioning for. If they're in demand, they have to start turning down meetings for other parts. There are girlfriends, boyfriends, parents, bookies...the list is endless. An experienced, big star may be able to maintain a zone of silence; a young actor who's just struck gold rarely does.

What you'll have is an unconfirmed rumor, as usual, with more than one site claiming that they've got good sources. Then some non-denial denials from the actor and their people. Then Hell breaks loose when at least 50% of Internet Trek fans hate the new actor...

I think they must be thinking for the future - the point of reviving Trek is to do several movies and who knows what beyond that - so they must be looking for someone who can have a major role as Kirk regardless of how big his role in this upcoming movie.

I wonder if they've already decided but are waiting on the announcement to make it seem like they really sweated bullets over it and auditioned every young stud in Hollywood to mollify all the naysayers. Not that ANYTHING would mollify them, short of the announcement that they had the foresight in 1977 to clone William Shatner and they've kept the guy on ice all this time. Hey it works for Vortas...now all they need is to get the memory transfer thing down...

I'm still goin' with Eion Bailey. If anyone has a better suggestion, let's hear it (with pictures natch).

Get a unknown actor like Malcom in the Middle actor lead.Or that guy who played the alien pharoah in Stargate the Movie,the ladyboy man.

Or use Fred Savage from the Wonder years.Remember that parody they did of Spocks Brain with the wrist band pain inducers?
He got Kirk down to a T.

Yeah, I think Evans would be good too.

You know, one virtue of Shatner not being in the film is that they don't have to fuss quite as much about the resemblance or lack thereof between Old Kirk and Young Kirk.

I believe the fan and even critic comparisons will be just as intensive, if not more so. I guess just having Nimoy makes the comparison more obvious to the casual viewer.

Hey, the guy's won Emmys!

I'll say it again. Chris Evans.

He looks totally & completely wrong in that picture. However, if we ever need to recast the role of John Shepard on SG:A, I think we found our guy.

With those piercing blue eyes and clean-cut looks, he wouldn't be a bad choice as Pike, either.

How tall is Evans? They're evidently looking for someone of no more than average height.

Can he do a Scottish accent? Maybe that's our Scotty? I just want to avoid the possibility of some skinny shrimp playing Scotty. Dammit, the guy has to look like he could punch a drunk Klingon across a bar laden with tribbles!

Well I've seen Quinto's height given as anywhere between 6'2" and 6'4" so maybe all the exaggerations cancel each other out?

I dont think its more important that he [the actor playing kirk] has the virtues of the role. As long as he fits the general physical type.

From the alleged casting sheet:

[JAMES KIRK] 23-29 Handsome,cocky self assured and earnest. Great physical condition. 6 ft or less

He has to be able to play a leading man. I saw Evans in Sunshine and he gave a fantastic performance. I remember him in F4 (the first one, I couldnt face the second one) and he was the best thing in that.

I think, although he is a fantastic actor, Quinto is somewhat of a gamble. As far as the studio is concerned. Heroes aside, what has he done? I know 24 etc, etc - but he's not exactly done movies before. Were I a suit, I'd be looking for someone with some box office draw. Someone with at least some grounding in movies.

This guy has already been in blockbuster movies, albeit in the background. I'd be suprised if he didnt have some sort of female fanbase, he's a good looking guy.

To me, he has a lot going for him. Better than someone like Ryan Phillipe, Ben Affleck or Josh Hartnett.

Evans was very Kirk-like in Sunshine. He's not scrawny, he's really cut. He'd be perfect.
