Kirk and Spock's Friendship

If the films count, then it would unquestionably be The Search for Spock, followed closely by The Wrath of Khan. If only TV episodes count, then I think you’re probably right about Amok Time being #1.

Other episodes that come to mind:

  • Balance of Terror. Stiles' concern that Spock could be a Romulan spy is logical, but Kirk feels he knows Spock well enough to completely rule out that possibility and continues to rely on him with absolute confidence.

  • The Devil in the Dark. Despite the great danger posed by the creature, Spock emphatically desires to keep it alive, but as soon as he thinks Kirk was in danger, he wants it killed.

  • The City on the Edge of Forever. Just a bunch of little things.

  • The Tholian Web. Kind of like The Search for Spock, but in the other direction. Spock forsakes logic and risks the ship with all hands in the attempt to rescue Kirk.

Devil in the Dark is a special one for the Shatner and Nimoy relationship too as actors. Shater's father passed during the filming, and he has said that watching Nimoy do the whole 'PAAAAIIINNNN' mind meld with the Horta was very much a connection between the two actors.

Operation: Annihilate also has some strong moments when Spock sacrifices his sight by accident to help stop the creatures that killed Kirk's brother and infecting his Nephew.

If the films count, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Three old, over the hill friends still adventuring together. Devoid of lives outside the ship, they even shore together.
Spock repeatedly chooses to be at Kirk's side rather than his brother's.

Oh, and the YouTube video "Broke Trek" :p
I havent seen TOS in the same light since seeing that

It shows up in all the films. In TMP Spock talks about “This simple feeling.” In TWOK we have “I have been, and always shall be, your friend,” and Spock’s death affects Kirk much more than all of TOS’s dead redshirts put together. In TVH Kirk tells Spock “You used to call me Jim.” In TFF, in addition to the things you mention, Kirk refers to Spock as his brother. (Somewhat disturbingly to me, the statement also appears to deny that Sam was his brother.) In TUC, Spock’s “vouching” for Kirk probably wouldn’t have been effective without the close friendship of the two. However, I think the lengths he (along with the rest of the gang) goes to and the sacrifices he makes for Spock in TSFS stand out as the strongest demonstration of all.

In the episode "Whom Gods Destroy" Kirk says that he and Spock are brothers. Captain Garth questions this, and Spock says:

"Captain Kirk speaks somewhat figuratively and with undue emotion. However, what he says is logical and I do, in fact, agree with it."

"Amok Time" for me too. This episode shows how much Kirk was willing to sacrifice for his friendship with Spock. Kirk could have lost his Captain status or been booted from Starfleet entirely. T'Pau saved Kirk's ass. And of course the emotional outburst displayed by Spock when he realized Kirk was alive, a close friendship for sure.

Which episode of TOS shows most strongly their close friendship? "Amok Time"?

JL

I like the emotion Kirk shows when he goes to Spock's cabin, telling him that he is the best First Officer in the fleet and that if he is to lose that officer, he wants to know why. Shatner is so good in that bit.

From the series, "Amok Time" followed by "City on the Edge of Forever", yet throughout the series there were so many smaller references to their friendship.

Even the new movie got that part right, when Spock states to young Kirk, "I am, and always shall be, your friend." Upon seeing Kirk he states his full name and almost reflexively makes that pronouncement.

Definitely agreeing with this. Shatner's, er, not my favourite actor, but I was actually really impressed with this scene. The writing was very in-character as well. "Amok Time" really is the best example, I think.

And regarding the films - captrek, I always took the fact that Kirk & Co were going back to Genesis in Search For Spock as a given considering their relationship at that point, really, not a particularly striking highlight of their friendship, and then they only really have that scene at the end together, so I'm not sure I'd say TSFS. I'd say The Final Frontier for me was the clearest summing-up of Bones, Kirk, and Spock's friendship - maybe not as clear as some of the episodes, but they were so obviously a unit in that film, if that makes sense.

Shatner gets a bad rap. He’s easy to make fun of because he can make bad material look really bad, but when he has a good script and is working with good people, he can be very, very good. In particular, I think he deserves huge praise for his work in TWOK-TSFS-TVH and some of the best TOS episodes like TCOTEOF and Amok Time.

Absolutely! Look at the end of City on the Edge, when he has to stop Bones from saving Edith. The look of sheer despair on his face, and the shaking fist. No words can convey what that action did.

But...I won't talk about the scene in the elevator with Spock, in that horrid epi I can't even recall about the monster who controls the children. Gah hate that episode, mind blank. :-)

I've got to go with Amok Time, because of the TV Guide description of the episode:

"Spock loses his cool and almost gets Kirk killed when an uncontrollable mating urge takes hold of him."

I agree with "Amok Time" and "City on the Edge of Forever", but I'd also vote for "Turnabout Intruder". When Spock mind melded with Kirk/Janice Lester, he knew instantly that it was Kirk. He knew his friend's mind so well.
