Kira's Hair in Season 7

^ I liked her hair in Emissary. Disliked the crew cut she had for the rest of season 1 and season 2. Wasn't crazy about her S7 hair - too 'ladylike'. Her haircut in the middle seasons was the best.

I thought her hair in season 7 was much better than in any of the other seasons, and more consistent with her character.

I liked Kira's hair in Season Seven the best. Truly hated the crew cut she wore after the pilot.

She's become an prominent member of Bajoran society, and she's had time to relax and enjoy life a bit more since her days living in caves. She's still tough and no-nonsense on the job, but she spends a bit more time on her appearance than before. It's a perfectly natural development. As to why the braids in particular, we can fanwank that it is a traditional Bajoran style, which would make sense for the character, though I don't recall any reason ever being given.

Kira's days as a freedom fighter hiding out from the Cardassians are long over. She no longer has to keep everything in her life as simple and practical as possible. She's finally settling into a new, more comfortable life that allows her more free time. So it's high time she experimented with her hair style, among other things.

I liked the season seven hair--as well as when she wore the Starfleet uniform. I thought she never looked more fetching then when she was dressed up as Commander Kira, Starfleet Officer.
