Kira's Hair in Season 7

Yeah...even with Kira relaxing some, she still seems like a very low-fuss type of person. Not a girly-girl.

I think the way you look says something about your personality. For instance, in a fanfic I wrote, I had one character who was a military officer who DID do elaborate things with her hair. And according to her people's standards, I made sure that she WAS a girly-girl off duty. One that is a mean shot with anything you can pull the trigger on, but still, a definite girly-girl.

Kira doesn't strike me that way, so it seemed inconsistent and out of character.

Yeah, I tend to make sure my characters' every facet fits their personalities when I'm writing. Most of the characters in the story I give the most attention to have rather... low-maintenance hairstyles to say the least, because their lives are in a constant state of disarray.

I'd be very angry if said story ever became a television series (hey, I can dream) and everyone had professional-looking cuts.

Reading about how Kira shouldn't have braids in her hair because she isn't enough of a "girly-girl" confirms my impression that this was a good choice for season 7. What makes Kira a great character is that she doesn't conform to any simple stereotype, and she evolves in a variety of subtle ways over time.

She's become an prominent member of Bajoran society, and she's had time to relax and enjoy life a bit more since her days living in caves. She's still tough and no-nonsense on the job, but she spends a bit more time on her appearance than before. It's a perfectly natural development. As to why the braids in particular, we can fanwank that it is a traditional Bajoran style, which would make sense for the character, though I don't recall any reason ever being given.

Still, flemm, I know it's very possible to get a very nice, feminine haircut without all the work. In my own case, I had to change stylists multiple times until I got someone who understood that NO, I do NOT want to straighten my hair and spend all that time, and that I wanted something that worked with curly hair. It looks better than any style I've ever had in my life--but it takes SO little work...literally, wash, dry in a towel, and then MAYBE 5 minutes, tops with a blow dryer. To my mind, all that I had to go through before was a big freaking waste of time. And I live an easy life--certainly not in any caves!

You know, I popped in to this thread the other day --briefly-- and only came back today to see if I had actually seen it here and not just imagined it.

Are we really discussing this? THIS, of ALL things is a point of contention? REALLY? REALLY?

Sure, why not? It's no different than any other detail.

I'm not questioning your impeccable sense of style, Nerys_Dukat, or your knowledge of available styles, which is doubtless superior to my own ;) The point I was making is that the actress playing the character suggested a change of this kind as a meaningful expression of Kira's increased comfort level and increased awareness of her importance as a public figure (or words to that effect, probably somewhere in the DS9 companion or some such thing).

So, for the change to express those ideas, it needed to be something that would come across as requiring a bit more effort and thought than what the character had worn previously, which the braid accomplishes. Evidence: we are debating that very point :techman:

I'm more curious as to why, with all the other advances we know the 24th century has to offer, people are assuming any one hairstyle takes any longer to achieve than any other.

Dude, Kira's season 7 hair rocked. I don't understand how anyone can say the 'do was out of character. Is Kira not allowed to think about her appearance a little bit now that she is no longer a resistance fighter? Does a cute hair style make her less of a bad-ass? I think not.

Did anyone know if you type up "Kira Nerys" on a search engine, the search suggestion feature will list "Kira Nerys hair" as a suggestion?

Kira is a lovely woman anyways, nd she looks feminine in just about any do...

Here are three views of her 7th season hairstyle;

This looks like the "typical" style I think that's talked about;

Same one, and from this angle, it looks lovely, and she looks soft and feminine.

And here's yet another view, which seems to look--different, but lovely, and nice..

I actually liked the 4th season hairstyle, and the Mirror Universe's Kira's hairstyle...

I'm not really sure why it's a point of contention, either.

However, since it IS, I'll chime in by saying that I LOVED her Season 7 hairstyle!

I like it a lot. I'm not sure what others object to. It's cute and practical.

I thought it looked a bit odd at first, honestly, but by the end of the season it looked awesome. I love the shot of her picking up the baseball in Sisko's old office (now hers)in the finale; her hair looks amazing there, and she looks stunning.

This is really a lot more relevant for discussion than a lot of threads which recieve a huge number of responses. In general trek discussion there tends to be some basically ridiculous threads, that, while fun to speculate on, are not really as relevant as Kira's hair. A few examples of recent threads ive seen or commented on are things like: 'Why dont they target the bridge?', 'Why are they always the only ship in range?', 'How do teleporters operate in civilian life?'

Like I say, these are fun to speculate on, but realistically they arent that relevant, because Star Trek is a tv show, and a lot of elements exist for dramatic purposes. Obviously the bridge would be targeted, but it wouldnt be too great within the context of the show because thats where most of the drama takes place, and where most of the characters are. The 'only ship in range' bit is for obvious dramatic purposes. The teleporters were only ever included in Star Trek because they couldnt afford the shot of a shuttle landing, they allow the trek characters to move about without having to worry overly about the inworld logistics, or real world production costs.

On the other hand Kira's hair is actually pretty important. In a world where most characters have no choice in what they wear, the choice of how they keep their hair is very important, because its the only way the audience sees how that character likes to present themselves. This is a very personal choice, it is a presentation of that persons personality. This becomes even more important in a show like Deep Space Nine, which is so much about character.

I actually quite liked Kira's hair in season 7. On the surface Kira doesnt seem like the sort of person who would bother with it; shes tough, she doesnt like fussing around and shes certainly not a girly-girl. However, look a bit deeper Kira does have this sort of fun, impulsive streak, and I think it actually fits for her to occasionally just do something different with the way she looks, just for the hell of it. The girls I have known who changed styles the most are really more tom boy than girly-girl, but its just something fun for them. A girly-girl puts loads of fuss into their appearance because they value it, girls like Kira mess around with their appearance just for a change, because they dont take their appearance that seriously. Things like this, which arent immediately obvious, give characters a lot of depth. You might compare it to the friendship between Bashir and O'brien, on paper it doesnt really seem to fit, its not something which immediately seems right, but in actuality it works well.
