Kira's Hair in Season 7

What was with Kira's hair in Season 7? Obviously the actress was growing out her hair a little, but why in the world did the show make her wear her hair like that? Did Nana Visitor style her hair like that when she wasn't working?

I actually loved it a lot. I'm surprised people hate it so much! She had such short hair for six seasons that it was nice to see her grow it out a bit. I thought it showed that she could be feminine while still be a tough Colonel. I also love the updated red uniform (from that awful orange). I thought Kira's appearance was a big improvement from prior seasons.

I also don't really agree that it's out of character. I can see where someone would be coming from with that statement, but... I don't know. I don't see it as defying Kira's strengths or anything. I think it says a lot about her development that she'd be willing to let it grow long and stylized for a change, but not in an automatically negative, 'weakened' light.

It's similar to why I love Aeryn Sun's later hairstyle in Farscape. That woman is still one tough Sebacean at the end of the series, but she's also a whole lot more. And she's willing to let her hair down -- pun intended -- and enjoy life a little.

It took a bit to get used to, but now I'm quite fond of it.

Oddly, it was the color more than the style that I found off-putting.

Agreed. Also, we got to see her in a Starfleet uniform - I had been waiting to see that since season 1 :techman:

I disliked it. It looked very...ladylike? The best Kira hairstyles were in the middle seasons - I liked her hair in the pilot, but the hairstyle in season 1 and 2 was also quite bad.

It's not my favorite of Kira's many hairstyles, but it's also not my least favorite either.

It's not even close to the worst female hairstyle I saw on DS9....

Oh dear, that really is awful!! :klingon: Still, DS9 would have had to work a lot more to beat VOY and Janeway, the queen of bad, schoolmarmy hairstyles!

It was probably the most flattering cut she had. Which is weird, because I usually like really short hair.

I loved her hair in Season 7. I thought it suited her. Longer and more feminine but still practical, and went very well with her Starfleet uniform.

It shows that she crew from a tough, no-nonsense, angry and very practical young woman into a more mature and comfortable individual.

As for the uniform, why couldn't she have worn something like that from the beginning instead of the enormous shoulder pads! I also found it odd how after her uniform changed in season four, all the other Bajoran uniforms remained the same.

Just my thoughts,
B

As I recall the change in hairstyle for season 7 was Nana Visitor's idea for the precise reason you describe. Similarly, it was her idea to go with the very short, almost military look after the pilot, as she felt it was more suitable for the character at that time.

I like the season 7 look, especially with the Starfleet uniform. Not necessarily more than the earlier styles, but it looks good.

Wow opinions really do vary, b/c one of the first things I thought during season 7 was how much I loved Kira's hair, right down to the little braid she sometimes had in there. Gorgeous.

It's not even that. There ARE longer-haired styles that would work, but from the perspective of a woman who does NOT like to spend any more than the absolute necessary time to look good, there are FAR lower-maintenance options that look good but still wash up and dry in hardly any time that I could see Kira choosing much more readily than that. I cannot see Kira wanting to spend the time it would take to maintain that style--the braids, getting the part exact every day, etc.

For me it is not the length of the hair, but the style. I'm not quite sure when females styling the hair to one side of the head became popular (80's?), but I thought that time had passed by Seaon 7. I just remember being surprised by the cut. Though the pic I had a link to showed Kira with a braid, I wasn't even thinking about it at the time. Though Nerys Dukat does make an interesting point... hard to see Kira braiding her hair everyday... of course she only braided a small strand.

By the way, I must be dense because I never even noticed that her Bajoran uniform changed over time! But I am not so dense that I didn't noticed the change to a Starfleet uniform during Season 7.

That's a good point. I see what you mean now.
