I've always wondered if that's why Kzin never made it back into trek. Not only the problem of the TAS rights but then issues with Niven's state. Now that Ringworld is going to be a series, I suppose we'll never see Kzin on trek again. That's a shame. Like it or not, Kzin are where Niven's worlds and Star Trek meet.

In a way that was Larry Niven's own fault for dusting off his short story "The Soft Weapon" - changing the character names and selling it for use to TAS for a quick buck. (I always laugh/get a kick out of the fact that Mr. Spock was the replacement for the Pierson's Puppeteer from that short story )

How has Discovery got anything to do with the cul de sac movie trio? For a start they Klingons have been redesigned, and the ships aren't fueled by home brew lager.

It was a real thread started in may to complain because DSC does not look dated. Now it just exists.

It really does not. Some folks simply can not accept facts. we know its prime, the folks who own the IP and get to decide what is and is not prime have said this is prime. So its prime. There is no room for argument there.

Had Enterprise seen a 5th season, the Kzinti would have returned in an episode entitled "Kilkenny Cats".

They had already built a CG model for their ship before it was officially canceled and the plan was to make them the new main adversary.

It would have been glorious!

Agreed, very retro - I really hope we'll see them in Discovery. But likely not until at least season 2 after they get the Klingon conflict wrapped up.

I hated the NX supposed "refit" though. I am an odd one, I disliked season 4 and thought season 3 was ENT at its best. I really think season 4 killed the show as it was trying to appeal to people who already hated it and left what it was becoming in season 3 far behind.

I hated the NX supposed "refit" though. I am an odd one, I disliked season 4 and thought season 3 was ENT at its best. I really think season 4 killed the show as it was trying to appeal to people who already hated it and left what it was becoming in season 3 far behind.

Different strokes an' all that. I was kind of on the fence about the proposed NX refit myself. Seemed like it was trying too hard to force it back into the Constitution-class design lineage without removing more of the Akira hyper-detailed aspects to it. It was a logical next step, IMO, but didn't really go far enough.

Oh, that refit is hideous, I'm really glad it was never canonised. With the catamarans and the secondary hull it is just a mess. A completely new ship using similar elements and ditching the catamarans would probably work though.

It would have been an ok step for a new class. I think STO ran with it here.

However as a "refit" it made zero sense in any way at all. that ship would have had some massive structural issues and why have two warp cores? And Two deflectors? TMP aside, this is not how a refit works or how Trek does refits.

So the Kzinti may have become official canon had we gotten a fifth season? It makes you wonder if they'd have been enemies of Earth, unwilling allies in the war with the Romulans since the conflict would have begun during Season 5 or a neutral power that stayed out of the conflict? The name is so similar to Xindi that I can see Archer and Trip cracking jokes about how they already had to fight to save Earth from one enemy with a name like that and here comes another.

Yep, since the Romulans were still a thing by the end of S4 and they were paving the way for the Earth/Romulan war, the Kzinti would have been a very interesting 3rd party to complicate the mix.

As for name similarities, Robert Wolfe created DS9's unseen race known as the Tzenkethi which derived part of its name from the Kzinti, but were not the same.

And that's another species that fought a war with the Federation. The mid-24th century was a time of conflict and bloodshed, wasn't it? The Cardassians. The Talarians. The Tzenkethi. No fewer than three different wars being waged around the time Picard was still in command of the Stargazer and the Enterprise-D was still on the drawing board.

There was also the Tholian attack that killed Riker's mother, the Romulan attack that killed Worf's parents, and so on. Yes, the 24th had some serious issues going on.

aside from the "blasters" it doesn't feel Kelvin to me at all.

The hand phasers may fire bolts like the EM-33 pistol and the Kelvin timeline phasers but their bolts are the correct cobalt blue for the TOS era. On the other hand the emitter head on these phasers has a three-pronged design much like the weapons in "The Cage," and one or more may be for bolts and the other(s) for emitting beams.
