Keiko and O'Brien, should they have been divorced?

In my opinion, if you're constantly having to "work and compromise" to make a relationship work, it's a bad relationship. Life is too short to put up with that crap - even with the 120+ lifespans in the 24th century.

IMHO, the divorce rate could be cut in half if every man applying for a marriage license was required to watch all the Trek episodes with Keiko in it.

Why? Because women are the only ones who can be difficult to live with in a relationship?

The divorce rate would be cut significantly more if every woman applying for a marriage license was required to listen to the tapes of Mel Gibson talking to his wife on the phone. And that relationship was actually REAL.

Umm, where did I say women are the only ones who can be difficult to live with? This thread is about the O'Briens, not Mel Gibson.

Well, no kidding! Mel Gibson is an immoral, horrible asshole. Same thing with the fictional Winn/Dukat. All of those made Keiko look like a Saint. Don't see what that has to do with the fact that I'd rather be disemboweled than live with Keiko.

PKTrekGirl seemed to imply that I'm a sexist pig who believes only females can be horrors for whom it would be preferable to self-immolate than live with. I don't feel that way and I don't see how anyone could infer that from my posts.

I certainly didn't think StarryEyed was being sexist in the slightest...and I'm female, and I don't think Keiko should get a pass for being a woman. Women can wreck a marriage just as well as a man can.

LOLz. Sorry to hear about your marriage. I can see your viewpoint but I do disagree, I thought the O'Briens, and Keiko, were both great, and realistic.

Wasn't it his girlfriend, not his wife? Not that that matters, I'm just asking.

Actually, if that shows anything it shows that you shouldn't get involved with Mel Gibson.

Personally, I don't get all the dislike directed at Keiko. She wasn't the only woman on the show to give her romantic partner a hard time from time to time. Kassidy gave Sisko grief in Rapture for choosing to follow his faith instead of undergoing the medical procedure (in this case I agree with Sisko - it was his choice, not hers). Jadiza gave Worf grief right before their wedding (in this case I agree with Worf - most of what he was asking for wasn't unreasonable).

And it's not like the men didn't give the women a lot of grief as well. Sisko tried to stop Kassidy from doing her job because he thought it was too dangerous (in this case I agree with Kassidy - it was her decision, not his). Worf made Jadzia miserable on Risa (in this case I agree with Jadzia - Worf was just being an ass). Even Miles gave Keiko grief when she came back from Bajor the first time (in this case I agree with Keiko - Miles was just being stubborn).

I wouldn't want to be married to either Keiko or Miles. Having to pick I would take Miles because he is easily made happy by being let out to play with Julian. Keiko takes more grown up work to make happy.

I think we did see a lot of conflict but more than that, we saw a lot of "meh" moments in their marriage. Things that aren't really good or bad, and it made their marriage seem dull at best. The writers should have put in more moments that showed them in love, but I don't think we can really assume they didn't have moments like that. With as many issues as they had, I don't think they would have stayed together unless they really had something good.

At least with Kasidy and Sisko, we had some truly good moments to balance out the fighting. (Now, Worf and Jadzia were not a good match--they were as fundamentally incompatible as Keiko and O'Brien--but that's a different story.)

See, that's what I have a problem with. Who says their relationship was unhealthy? They obviously had conflicts, but overall I don't see their marriage as being that bad. Relationships are complicated, especially when one person gets possessed by evil.

I think Miles/Keiko had a good marriage, for all their conflict. I think the problem was that the writers didn't show us enough "good" moments to balance out the strife. Look as Sisko/Yates, she was a Maquis supplier! That kind of conflict is a lot bigger than anything the O'Briens went through; I mean, Keiko wasn't helping out a terrorist organization, was she? Yet Sisko and his lady are the ones getting all the lovey-dovey stuff and when Yates comes back from prison or whatever, he's just all, "Hey baby, love you, let's go find an ancient Bajor city, mmkay?"

As for the "other" married couple, Worf/Jadzia, I wasn't really crazy about that pairing, mostly because I'm not a big Worf fan (he's such a stick in the mud!), but considering his last relationship was with Troi (worst pairing ever! and also, considering the bone-breaking sex he was having with Dax, how did he manage to not kill Troi when they were together?), anything was an improvement.

You know, as "soft" as Troi appeared to be, there's no reason to assume she's any less physically durable than Dax. A less skilled combatant and athlete and less interested in facing physical punishment, sure, but maybe not less capable of taking it. It's not like Betazoid/Humans and Trill are ever described as any more or less physically capable than the others. So maybe we just never saw her sheepish and painful visits to Beverly.

Alternately, maybe Dax just likes it *really* rough and Worf was willing to go gentler with Troi since she couldn't challenge him like K'Ehleyr did and Jadzia later would. Ezri didn't seem to have any broken bones after all.

Kestrel, that's a good point. Mostly, I just find the whole Worf/Troi thing so loathsome and ridiculous and WTF that I try to poke holes in it whenever I can. I don't know what they were thinking when they put those two together. Well, I guess I kind of do, it was supposed to be the whole "Beauty and the Beast" dymanic, but it was an epic FAIL. Even the actors protested the pairing. And I don't see what the point even was, since she ended up with Rikker anyway (just like we knew she would since the first episode).

In no way, shape or form, were Worf/Troi suited to each other. I mean, some people are saying Miles/Keiko weren't compatible, but Worf/Troi was WAY worse. At least Jadzia embraced Klingon culture and was a tough chick. I don't hate Troi, but she usually had that whole 'delicate feminine flower' thing about her. One of the worst pairing is Trek, right up there with Chakotay and Seven on my "people who shouldn't date" list. Miles/Keiko was much better.

Yup. They were big with the make-up sex. That's probably why they made such an effort to fight all the time.
