Kate Mulgrew - Orange is the New black

From FB tonight. "‘Orange Is the New Black’: The Daily Beast Staff Debates Who’s the Best Character"

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articl...t-staff-debates-who-s-the-best-character.html

"...Galina “Red” Reznikov (Kate Mulgrew)

She had me at the used-tampon sandwich. Red is the impossibly cool (but probably murderous) Russian grandmother you wish you had. An unrecognizable Kate Mulgrew (the captain from Star Trek: Voyager) chews through every accented line while ruling the kitchen with a spatula. Red arguably has the show’s most-compelling story arc, as she gets on the bad side of the mustachioed Officer “Pornstache” Mendez. She’s the de facto mother of the other inmates. She’s a chef. She’s a raging bitch. You love her, but you still fear her “tit punch.”

-Sujay Kumar, Senior Homepage Editor..."

Great piece, although I liked the blurb on Sophie best, since it explained how they did the before/after sex change transformation of the character.

Naturally I like Red best, and Nicky a close second.

Wow, that was super interesting about Sophia! Very cool.

I liked, of course, Red as Kate Mulgrew is just all win and all sexy and all all all.. well you know.

But otherwise I liked Crazy Eyes and Big Boo best. I want to see more of both of them and both of their back stories.

I remember when Crazy Eyes was thinking she was in a relationship with Piper and that was just so out there. Then she kind of disappeared until (What I think is) the best episode of the season with the radio interview and man talk about awesome character development. To go from "Why does everyone call me Crazy Eyes" to her listening to that interview was so sad but so beautifully played. I do hope we get to see her again next season and maybe even have a flashback episode with her. I would love it too if we do get an answer to her question.

But when you see her parents it becomes possible that every thing is an act.

Like Worf overcompensating at being Klingon after being raised by a human family.

Episode #7 Blood Donut

In the previous ep, when Piper was making up with her BFF Polly on the telephone, they shared a "moment" over Piper's feelings for the drug importer, Alex.

Piper, nice WASPY lady that she is, felt like she should apologize to the drug runner... I presume for thinking "ill" of her because she assumed Alex ratted her out.

Then Piper realized she needed to apologize to more people than "just" Alex. "Piper Chapman... the Apology Tour" was how she decided to bill her new quest because there were so many people she'd wronged in her life.

This ep was the start of that "tour" and who better to start it with than... Watson.

Watson has arrived at the prison, straight from her TWO WEEKS in the SHU for having the temerity of asking for a female guard to frisk her and for fighting off the male guard who hustled her from her first day in the electrical shop.

As she stands in the prison yard, arms outstretched and eyes closed with a smile on her face, Watson draws attention from both people within the prison building and out in the yard.

She doesn't care.

Later we see Watson and Chapman crawling through the ductwork looking for a break in an electrical line. As Chapman tries to bond over Watson's experience in the SHU and her return to "civilization", Watson catches a clue as to why Chapman is being so nice. PIPER caused her to be sent to the SHU. Piper refuses to take the whole blame, but is sorry none the less before asking if Watson was going to turn her in. "I ain't no snitch" the kid proclaims before dismissing the white woman.

Watson's flashbacks were sad... not because her mother neglected her (we never saw her), not because she had no options in life (colleges were fawning over her to give the track star a scholarship) but because she was lonely. Lonely as a preteen... lonely as a high schooler. She wanted friends, wanted to belong somewhere, and when someone finally invited her to stop by a rocking party... the host threw her out! The thug, the head of this gang was willing to buy her shoes, whatever she needed to get into college but he didn't want her hanging with his crew. HE didn't want her demise on his soul.

Wow.

Talk about integrity and that night was the first time he met her. (Unlike, let's say... another drug runner of our acquaintance.)

Unfortunately not all young men can espouse that philosophy and before we know it she's robbing stores with her new boyfriend and watching him run away when she's caught.

So Watson is well aware that people can leave her hanging. Piper wasn't the first and won't be the last.

Miss Claudette has finally left the library and showed up for work in the kitchen, much to Red's relief. Red admitted she tried to make Miss C's coconut cake but it turned out so badly Nicky pronounced it cocoNOT! When Miss C asked what punishment Nicky suffered for such a review, Mama Red laughed and admitted the kid was right and avoided the Russian's wrath.

It was such a nice bonding moment between these two old war horses, women who learned long ago "how to do their time". Red knew Miss C was studying law books. I wonder if Red was worried she might lose this old friend to parole?

Speaking of bonding moments, the show opened with Nicky and Alex laughing over a childish dare that Alex accepted and lost. With a mouth full of saltines sputtering over Nicky's shirt, Alex looked less like a drug runner and more like a woman having a ball with a new friend.

Speaking of having a ball... this ep also had the first meeting of the WAC (Women's advisory Council). We discovered how little it takes to buy off the cooperation of the elected/not elected members... a couple of Dunkin Donuts and the promise of "real" coffee. The girls didn't get anything from the prison that they asked for, but Taystee got 2 offers from her fellow WAC members to lend her "50 Shades of Grey" so she was well satisfied.

Watson wasn't satisfied. The track was closed while she was in the SHU and she exercised through the night between walking rounds by the guards, much to the displeasure of her fellow inmates (which include Taystee, Miss C and Piper). None of the ladies can shut Watson down, so NATURALLY  Yoga Jones shows up to talk to the young woman. Lord that woman has patience... and a MEAN right cross when Watson goes one step too far. :wtf:

Did you notice Miss Claudette's curiosity when she watched her fellow killer walk away?

Speaking of apologies... Piper thinks she has a way to turn her empty words into meaningful action and it DOESN'T require chewing jalapeños. She asks Healy to reopen the track, showing him that allowing the prisoners to exercise will cut down on inmate health costs.

He is unimpressed and blows her off, but not before his boss Caputo comes in and diss'es Healy in front of Piper.

A dejected Piper decides to bring her clothes to the laundry and runs into Alex who tells her its "closed." Piper tries to leave but Alex does her a "favor" by taking the bundle of clothes anyway and wordlessly hands her a receipt. Piper tries to walk away again, but turns back to reassure her former lover that she's "over" the negative feelings that Piper was spewing the first 3 weeks of prison... and she magnanimously offers to be "friends".

As Piper looked away during this little speech, Alex smiles and rolls her eyes... but I'm not sure how to take it. Is this the experienced con, recognizing her "mark" is ripe for the picking? Or is this the former paramour loving / lamenting over Piper's fumbling's?

Either way, Piper missed the look and walked away from a now silent, non-smiling Alex.

The next day, when Toothless Tiffany = Pennsytucky is railing against Piper's evil theft of the WAC election, Alex shuts her down with the most unusual threat I've ever heard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0WHobjF3GI

Hmmm.

[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0WHobjF3GI[/yt]

Maybe she's not (?) acting the part of the con.... this time.

Speaking of cons...

Piper tries to get Healy to sign onto re-opening the track. Healy tries to con Piper into finding the cell phone sending updates to prisonpoon.com Piper tries to con Healy with a cellphone that has been cleansed of identifying markers, leaving the naughty pictures behind. Healy welshes. Piper discovers a kindred spirit in one of the new female guards and tells her how to save the prison money.

Healy presents the cleansed cellphone to the assistant warden who doesn't care who owned it, she only cares its been confiscated as she brandishes it in front of Caputo.

Caputo has lost some of his power over searching guards and retaliates by taking an idea from a female prison guard he has designs upon, and reopens the track which takes away some of Healy's imaginary power over the inmates.

Healy is no fool, he recognizes the argument behind reopening the track, and realizes his prized prison protégé is working around / against him.

He scowls as he watches Piper run around the track, while she smiles as Watson speeds by her... reminding Piper, "This doesn't make us even."

"Piper Chapman... The Apology Tour" continues next week.

;)

Addendum:

I know I skipped the part about Healy's Ukrainian mail order bride & her Mother, whiny Larry in the bar who's not hitting/hitting on the cute bartender, whinny Larry in another bar with pregnant Polly and involuntarily celibate, hirsute Pete.

What I really regret is not discussing Taystee's parole board hearing, not to mention her 2 friends who were helping her to cram for same and Sophia's contribution by doing up Tastee's hair.

There was even a reminder of Piper's attempts to get Tricia paroled. The chick wrote 3 letters, but Tricia's appeal was rejected.

At least the WASP tried.

Mendez tried to recruit Red into his smuggling ring for 10% of the take, and Red said No! Young Diaz tried to teach the female guard how to play dominoes while Big Boo brought in a new service puppy to train.

yeah I missed that and probably more, but its way past my bedtime, so if you want the stuff I missed, just rewatch the darned show.

:)

I think she realized what she had done when Flores went batshit crazy on the stall door. Just another thing Piper is going to have to apologize for, later. Both to Flores, owner of the phone, and all the girls who would only use "that" stall to do their business. :alienblush:

I did find the bitchy female guard surprisingly compassionate during Flores' emotional meltdown.

But I do have a question about the idea of a hidden phone left on all the time.

How did Flores recharge that battery so it didn't die?

Speaking of female guards, am I the only one who assumed the new/young female guard was going to have a "thing" for Piper (because she was nice  towards the WASP) at this point I the story?

Speaking about people who have a thing for Piper... here's a neat interview with Laura Prepon, "Alex's" actress.

Possible spoiler...

I don't remember if it was in this episode or the next one, forgive me if it was in the next. But when that nice new female guard was holding the ladder for Piper and she started remembering how she made her constantly rebag all of her groceries that at that point she was going to get pissed and do something to Piper? That guard just seems too nice to be a prison guard

I wonder if we would revisit he after 10 years in that job if she was still as nice

I think she's a reminder that not all guards are a-holes.

The skinny black guard that moved Watson out of Miss Claudette's cubicle has always been professional.

The big (not the fat one) white guard that muscled Watson out of the electrical shop is usually quiet and respectful.

They aren't all after something they shouldn't have, like Pornstache, Bennett, Healy, Caputo, and that Assist Warden chick. (What IS her name???)

in regards to prison guards being A-holes....you guys know about the prison experiment right?

anyway every time I watch somethign about prison life the guards are shown as A-holes and then I start to feel bad for the inmates. But then I'm like wait, these people are criminals, murderers, drug dealers, thieves, why should I feel bad for them. I always get torn on that. You start to sympathize with the characters but their still criminals

No, I was unaware of "the prison experiment". I assume you mean the Stanford one? http://www.prisonexp.org/

While its true that the inmates ARE criminals, we have to remember so are Mendez, Bennett and the Assist Warden chick. Mendez is a drug pusher. Bennett has knowingly broken the law to have intercourse with Daya, and the Assist Warden chick is an
embezzler.

The nice female guard tries to follow orders from Caputo and acts like a "dick" with
Miss Claudette and reaps the firestorm of her anger.
Caputo is wrong about treating these people as "inmates' instead of fellow humans and I hope "nice female guard" has learned THAT lesson.

can't get into the show- gave it to the first 4 episodes and just not digging it!

It's certainly not everyone's cup of tea. It is pretty much the opposite of Trek, it's about people who are highly flawed, and are paying the price.

I already liked Jenji Kohan's other series Weeds, so I was pretty sure I'd like this one.

yeah that's the one. I always found that very interesting, unfortunately it didn't end well for the people involved

I haven't seen the whole show yet, we've been watching one episode a night

with Weeds the characters were just as flawed, but there was comedy, it was like messed up Bing and Bob road movie

It is undecided and I thought by 3rd or 4th episode it would of made up it's mind....oh well.

it took me two full episodes to start to really like it,

it's not for everyone, there are people I've recommended it too and people I don't
