Kate Mulgrew - Orange is the New black

Nicki's nanny must have worn Shalimar. Otherwise it seems an odd thing to recognize. It's a comforting vanilla, Nicki's mom probably wore Poison

(Poor JRulez, such a detailed analysis/description and all I do is reply about perfume.)

I'm just glad you didn't rag on me about ignoring the election hoopla or the barracks scene between Red and Piper.

You know the one I mean... Red to Piper, sotto voce

"Go Away"

And yes... that is a real novel Red's reading, unlike the book on Piper's bedside storage unit.

"Depths of Despair" (Blue cover") is fake, and its "author" is actually the artistic director for OitNB and your new fav... Mad Men.

:mallory:

ETA: I thought the pillow scene that followed was evocative of Piper's need to reconnect to someone / something comforting from her past... too bad she didn't hear in that bathroom scene that Alex misses "the business" of drug importing more than her replacement "girlfriend" = heroin.

Of course I looked up the book Red was reading when I first saw that ep.. heh. I loved seeing Red soooo at peace in the silence.

And yeah, Piper has the feels for Alex but how much of it is just that she's a real person from her past and not a terrifying new person and she needs someone familiar?

Exactly... although to be fair, we should probably call Alex "a terrifying person from her past" given the fact that she had no qualms about putting Piper in danger.

"There was 50,000 dollars in that bag. If you had lost it, {they} would have killed you".

I believe Alex when she describes herself as a manipulative bitch, er, pragmatist and that's why she's so fun to watch.

Like the Eleanor of Aquitane character in "The Lion In Winter", each scene she plays in means several different things depending on whether you think she's lying or telling the truth "this time".

For several years, "Lion In Winter" was my fave movie. (I graduated high school in 1970.) But that Kate got to keep her hair color.

Only the foolish -- and only once. :D

Hey, I have a question. Someone (a male fan) is asking me what color Kate Mulgrew's eyes are. He says they look dark grey in pix.

Those of you who have seen her in person -- what color are her eyes?

they're a bluish grey, but the times I've seen her in person even sitting front row was still like 20 feet from her so not so easy to see the color of her eyes.

Eye colour is just another obstacle, like anniversaries, birthdays and Christian names, where a woman can get rewarded with diamonds and furs for proving that their mate has huge areas of wasteland in their mind that is barred from being populated with her petty minutia and drivel.

I am asleep and you are my dream, but not necessarily in a good way.

spoiler=brief description /spoiler

Don't forget the "equals sign" even if you're not putting in a "brief description".

From FB tonight. "‘Orange Is the New Black’: The Daily Beast Staff Debates Who’s the Best Character"

"...Galina “Red” Reznikov (Kate Mulgrew)

She had me at the used-tampon sandwich. Red is the impossibly cool (but probably murderous) Russian grandmother you wish you had. An unrecognizable Kate Mulgrew (the captain from Star Trek: Voyager) chews through every accented line while ruling the kitchen with a spatula. Red arguably has the show’s most-compelling story arc, as she gets on the bad side of the mustachioed Officer “Pornstache” Mendez. She’s the de facto mother of the other inmates. She’s a chef. She’s a raging bitch. You love her, but you still fear her “tit punch.”

Great piece, although I liked the blurb on Sophie best, since it explained how they did the before/after sex change transformation of the character.

Naturally I like Red best, and Nicky a close second.
