Karaoke!

A good bad influence

Have you ever done it? What songs do you like to sing?

Me, I did karaoke for the first time yesterday. A friend of mine celebrated her brithday in an Irish pub (well, a German version of an Irish pub, to be precise) where they have a karaoke night every week. At first I didn't think I could make it (I'm rather shy and hate to stand in front of so many people), but once I was on the stage singing it felt great!

The pub was crammed full of people, so it wasn't exactly an intimate atmosphere. It felt like everyone was watching me. My hands where shaking and I couldn't really look anyone in the eyes. Hell, I even forgot the first lines of one of my favorite songs! (I sang The Cure's classic Friday I'm In Love, by the way.) But once the song started and I began to sing, it really was a fun experience. I don't really remember much of what happened in these minutes, because of the rush of adrenalin, but I think my voice sounded higher than I expected. That was weird and I'm not sure if the DJ maybe pitched my voice a little higher. (I have no clue why he would think that was a good idea.)

The great thing about karaoke, however, is the applause afterwards. Everyone gets an applause and I think that's a nice thing. It doesn't really matter if you can sing. The most important thing, I guess, is that you enjoy yourself.

I even sang another song that night: There Is A Light That Never Goes Out by The Smiths. And that one was even more fun, because (like Morrissey) you don't really have to sing in key or something. However, I will definitely go again.

So, what about you? :)

They call me the Velour Fog ... ;)

I'm sure they do... Just try not to crash the restaurant this time, okay? ;)

I LOVE karaoke! It's been far too long since I've done it --many months, probably almost a year-- but I don't get out much these days, I'm afraid. I shall have to rectify that soon.

Yeah, one of the great things about it is that you don't have to be a good singer (although I like to think I'm halfway decent ) -- everyone gets encouragement and applause anyway. A terrific atmosphere, usually. Sure, sometimes you'll get some people that are painfully atrocious, but it's all part of the package.

I remember my first time, almost five years ago... I sang Pat Benatar's "Love is a Battlefield" with my friends cheering me on. After that, I went almost every week for quite a while. Ah, those were the days...

I go just about every Saturday night. I mostly sing country songs, although I do a little pop and rock every once in a while. It's a fun way to get and give live entertainment.

I've done Karaoke on the Wii-- I think it's an American Idol program or something. I did "Up Around The Bend" and a couple of others; I can't remember at the moment.

Creedence Clearwater Revival on American Idol ? Are you sure it wasn't Guitar Hero: World Tour (which has singing) ?

Yes, you're right, that's exactly what it was.

And one of the other songs I did was the one that Dean on Supernatural did in that outtake, if anybody remembers that; I'm having an amnesia moment here....

The most fun karaoke experience I've had was getting slightly sozzled with a bunch of Japanese schoolteachers in a private booth and serenading them with an awful rendition of We Built This City. It was painfully bad.

I've done it once. Yet another of the many things in life I never would have done without my girlfriends gentle prodding. And without a few drinks in me. I sang Dirty Love by Frank Zappa. I was going to do Run Run Away by Slade as my next song, but the bar was starting to fill up and I think we got bumped off the list so we decided to go.

If you're as tone-deaf as me, one of the best songs to yell out is Aerosmith's I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing. :shifty:

Once, and I was really drunk. Fortunately, too drunk to remember it.

(Pity those in the bar... I can't sing. At. All.)

I've never done karaoke, but I'd try it if I had the chance. I don't think I'm a bad singer and I'd go with something safe.

I think that's rather difficult to sing, like most songs by The Smiths. I'd go for "The Boy With A Thorn In His Side" if I had to as I'm always singing along to it, anyway.

I've only ever "done" karaoke once, at a Christmas do some years back. My tone deafness shone through with the music of Shakin' Stevens.

I'd so do it again. :guffaw:
