Kamen Rider and General Tokusatsu

Cosmic Fury was halfway that, reusing Kyuranger mecha footage but otherwise telling an original story. But yes, that does seem to be the idea, a completely original take not based on a Sentai series. At least, I hope it's original, rather than yet another MMPR reboot.

Of course, as we've seen before, just because it's in development doesn't mean it'll actually get made.
True, one can only hope that they do a Original Power Rangers series using Original Suits, Mecha, & Storylines.

They said they'd be doing 5-episode playlists, so it remains to be seen whether they'll be archiving the episodes every Monday, but I hope so.

Seems a bit underwhelming now that we have the full version. Only the middle portion is new. The rest is just padding from the first section.

Nice. I was unimpressed by the song the first time I heard it, but the more I hear it, the more I like it, to the point that it's become one of my favorite toku themes. (That often happens. One of the only themes I loved right away was the Kamen Rider Build theme, "Be the One.") It's got some pretty complex melodies and harmonies, the opening instrumental is striking, and the singers' voices are quite nice.

I'm surprised that the video has nothing to do with the show, even thematically, aside from the shots of the red and green lights on the singers' eyes vaguely suggesting a Rider helmet. The images are pretty generic and bland compared to the show's opening titles.

There’s two versions much like with Gavvs “Got boost” music video. One with the riders and one without. I guess the artists/company want a strictly artist version released

Here’s Zeztz version with him included

A big episode this week, revealing Nem's backstory. It's very much not what I expected.
The shrine in her manager's home at the end made me think Nem was dead, but the preview had a shot of her in a hospital bed. I think she's in a coma, which explains why she's always already in the dream world when Baku arrives -- she's always asleep. It's a tragic twist. Although come to think of it, it was hidden in plain sight in her name, which means "sleep."

I think the ex-wife said the accident was four years ago, and according to her official bio, Nem is 20. So either she hasn't changed since she was 16, or all those video commercials and posters of her are being generated artificially somehow. I wouldn't be surprised to see characters in a Yuya Takahashi series using AI, but it doesn't seem to fit the dream theme here. Could her manager somehow have access to her in the dream world? Could he be working with Nox? Maybe that's why his nightmare puts him in prison, because he's punishing himself. Though Baku isn't convinced he's the Dreamer.

Well, certainly a meaty episode giving us a lot to think about.

When we get to a point where real world Nem wakes up that will be interesting. She probably doesn't know Baku. The bride didn't recognize Baku in public last episode

I guess this confirms that the episodes will go up permanently every Monday. I'm tempted to just start waiting until Monday so I don't have to put up with the ads talking over parts of the livestream (the archived version pauses for the ads), but I feel I should keep watching the livestream, because I want it to perform well and convince Toei and TokuSHOUTsu to keep simulcasting Kamen Rider in the future.

Disney- Didn’t we use to own a franchise like this in the early 2000’s?

Disneys answer to Power Rangers is “Armorsaurs”

Okay, looking into it, this is based on a Korean series called Armored Saurus, doing the Power Rangers/VR Troopers/etc. thing of mashing up the original show's FX/action footage with new footage of an American cast. Except it's not really tokusatsu, since the action footage and armored characters are all CGI animation. Although I skimmed the first episode of Armored Saurus on YouTube, and it uses actual live-action locations instead of the pure virtual sets of the Disney adaptation.

And boy, is Armorsaurs bad. The writing is dumb, some of the characters are annoying, the virtual sets are very cheap, and they cram in too much action up front without giving us a reason to care about it. I gave up after the first half of the premiere, though I may be masochistically completist enough to see how the rest of it goes later. Even Yvonne Chapman's presence isn't enough to make me want to follow the show going forward. Although, not having cable, I wouldn't be able to anyway until it came to Disney+, which apparently won't be until February.

They started it 10 minutes early this week, despite the social media announcements giving the usual starting time, but fortunately the stream allowed rewinding.

So -- some big questions answered, new questions raised.
Nem was critically injured and disappeared, and Baku's new mission is to find her. But we learn that Nox has her, and that she's actually "guiding" the bad dreams somehow.

It wasn't really explained where all the ads and posters of Nem are coming from if she's been absent for four years, aside from Nasuka's speculation about old footage or CGI.

It's always weird to me when songs like this keep going back and forth between English and the whatever language where the song came from. I was watching a lot of Bollywood a while back they do it constantly, they'd even have half a sentence or phrase in Hindi and half in English. And this was also a good way to see how inaccurate the subtitles were when they subtitles would say something different from what they actually said in English.

Are the theme songs like this specifically written for the shows, or preexisting songs that they find to use in the show?

The influence of centuries of colonialism, and English being effectively the global lingua franca, at least where media and business are concerned.

Also, of course, this season of Kamen Rider is the first one being simulcast in the Anglophone world, so they're putting in more English than usual. "Visions" has the highest percentage of English lyrics of any Kamen Rider theme song, and we've got the Zero character speaking English, the English "mission" descriptions, etc.

The theme songs and insert songs are always written for the shows, as far as I know. Original songs have always been a major part of tokusatsu and anime.

Via DVD News Flash on Facebook:

I don’t want to doom Zeztz but it’s unclear right now if a physical dvd set will be made

Shout has some closeout-type prices on the past few Super Sentai DVD sets:

Dekaranger - $9.99 (!)
Fiveman - $15.99
Abaranger - $15.99

If you haven't used the SHOUT10 code before, you can save another 10% with that.

Baku undercover at a restaurant. There's weirdly little difference between the dream world and the real world here, but I guess I can buy, as a fictional conceit, that a veteran chef would dream about his repetitive day-to-day process in meticulous detail. And the whole thrust of the episode seemed to be about paralleling the dream world and the real world, especially at the end.

Part of that was having Nem enter the Mission Room (aha, we have a name for it) in the dream, not to be confused with Fujimi-tachi entering the Mission Room in reality. Interesting that Nem not only volunteered to help "Seven" with his cases, but was given spy gear by Zero. I think we may have been wrong to assume that Nasuka would be the Secondary Rider. After all, Nem is all about playing roles and changing costumes...

And Fujimi is obsessed with Black Cases because of his former apprentice's mysterious resignation/disappearance a year ago. I would bet that Nox will turn out to be that apprentice. Although it's just as possible that the apprentice will show up as the Secondary or Tertiary Rider. Or it could be both, since there have been plenty of evil Riders, including in every previous Yuya Takahashi season.

I wonder how soon it will be that Minami learns what's going on. Last week, we had Baku speaking openly with the Dreamer in front of her, saying things that she must have wondered about. And here he was using the Zeztz License to scan the food, though we didn't get to see how he convinced Minami not to eat the food.

This is the first time I didn't watch the premiere live, since the YouTube feed was glitching and lagging on my TV, I'd already turned off my computer for the night, and I was sleepy anyway. I belatedly remembered that that happened once before with YouTube on my smart TV, and the fix was to reboot the set, which I guess it was overdue for anyway.

Well we're coming up on that time of the year. The next Super Sentai series name could be getting closer to being revealed. Usually by the 35th episode of the current sentai the name of the next Super Sentai series is trademarked officially

Internally at Toei it's probably already known but the IPDL trademark has not been published. Usually it takes a bit of time to make sure the name doesn't resemble any other trademark/property out there

Since Toei locked down leaks even harder than in the past it's tougher to to know when something might be happening soon

Gozyuger's trademark was on October 31st. Could October 31st strike again?
