Justin Lin is directing Star Trek XIII

The really important question is this.
Is Justin Lin a long time true Star Trek fan or is he a clueless infidel, bent on Trek's distraction like Abrams was?

Nicholas Meyer wasn't a star trek fan either when he did The Wrath of Khan. Just saying.
to be honest, I think that if the first reboot movie was so successful among a wider audience than just a portion of star trek fans it was precisely because the director wasn't a huge star trek fan. When JJ said that he didn't do the movies for the star trek fans (only) I got what he meant (and that it's what he HAD to do) and I never found it offensive or against the star trek fans.

anyway JJ doesn't hate star trek. People take his interviews out of context. He once explained that he wasn't a fan as a kid - but he's NOW - because when he was a little guy - and guess why - he didn't get star trek, from the pov of a kid.

Just for the record, I was only kidding with my comment.

When can I buy tickets?!

Honestly, every bit of Star Trek I get at this point is gravy. Tasty, tasty gravy.

But it will never be "my" Star Trek, it is simply impossible. Nor is it fair to hold that against any new Star Trek project. Star Trek was made during a very different time in Hollywood, in society and I was exposed to it at a very impressionable age.

When I was 13 in the early/mid-80's, I had no idea that I would be lucky enough to get new live-action material featuring my favorite characters thirty years in the future. All we had were sporadic novels, a monthly comic and movies from a cast that was quickly aging.

So I hope the members of the Holy Church of the Rod will forgive me for grabbing a big tub of popcorn and enjoying what Justin Lin brings to the franchise.

Fuck, I'm 43. Relatively healthy, have a great family and get the chance to revisit characters that I love periodically. Life is good.

I had the feeling you did but there are many people who are completely serious with that sentiment.

While I had wanted Rupert Wyatt, or Edgar Wright, Lin is certainly an interesting choice. He is a highly competent technical director, who does well with large ensemble casts, and has a certain recognition attached to him. I can understand why Paramount would want him.

People need to get over the fact that he did The Fast and The Furious. I have no love for those films either, but they just aren't my cup of tea. He isn't making a Fast and the Furious Trek movie, no moreso then Robert Wise made Star Trek TMP similar to The Sound of Music. He's directing the script he is given, he isn't just making it up. The Enterprise isn't going to have a big spoiler on the back and NOS injection into the Warp core.

A fair amount of "Run Silent, Run Deep" found its way into ST:TMP - of course, it was there from early drafts, I dunno whether the script caused the studio to think of Wise or not.

Not really a fan of his work but i'm feeling pretty indifferent. I imagine he'll make an entertaining movie that will appeal to the mass audience. I just hope things don't get dumbed down more.

Regarding Lin being abit too 'rad' 'cool' for Trek (which most of the complaints are about the nufilms) well hard to believe now but TOS was trying to be somewhat rad back in the 60s. It was the movies that made Trek more mature/middle aged (to reflect the actors ages for one thing)

For some reason I've mixed-up Justin Lin and John M. Chu, and came here for a rant... Then it hit me - it's the Fast & Furious guy.

Suffice it to say, I have absolutely no problem with this choce.

Lin is a lot better of a choice than Orci. I wonder what Orci's involvement is now, how much JJ is still involved, if those two writers are still on board, and if the script is going to be overhauled.

This is a really cool post. Amen.

27 here. TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT. That's "my" era. And I treasure it fiercely. Especially DS9. But this doesn't prevent me from enjoying nuTrek. In fact luckily enough I quite like it. Lin seems like an ace pick for its continuation and I can keep on hoping that the franchise will return to smaller screens someday whilst awaiting these sporadic helpings and diving into other franchises, other worlds, other "arts."

Looking forward to this.

I expect the current script will be significantly rewritten, but will serve as the blueprint for the movie.

Yes it is, and so am I. Merry Christmas to us.

I was hoping for Matthew Vaughn, but I'm definitely interested to see what Lin brings to the table.

As I've stated elsewhere, I'm far more curious at this point about who is writing the script than I am about who is directing it. With all due respect to Bob Orci, who seems like a decent enough guy, I don't care for his storytelling and was pretty disappointed in that regard on the last two Trek films. I'm going to be leery of any script he still has a hand in, though he's welcome to surprise me.

I did enjoy the last few F&F films and I think Lin is probably a good choice for the director's chair. He clearly knows how to deliver a slick, exciting thrill ride, how to handle an ensemble cast, and has a lot of technical expertise. If he's given a well-conceived and well-written script, I'm pretty optimistic he can do great things with it.

I'm pretty excited about this news. Lin seems to know how to handle ensembles and does action very well. Not only that, but he opens the door for any of his Fast & Furious costars to sign on to Star Trek. Imagine Dwayne Johnson in a Star Trek that wasnt' godawful.

pretty exciting Christmas present for Trek fans. I was dreading clicking the link, because deep down i figured they picked Frakes.

Mr Lin will undoubtedly, budgetary contraints permitting, demand that Mr Johnson be cast as the head of the USS Enterprise galley with the one proviso that Mr Johnson be allowed to shout Can you smell what the Chef is cooking? just as the ship blows a Klingon Bird of Prey to hell.

Oh, the nightmares scenarios. . .They make the Kobayashi Maru look positively winnable without so much as 2 seconds of help from a North Korean hacker.

I think enough time has passed for this one:

Star Trek XIII - The Search for Paul Walker

Vin Diesel to be cast as the voice of the USS Enterprise computer.

Kirk: Computer, time to intercept with the Romulan warbird.

Computer: I am Groot!
