Of course, no one knows how much profit was actually made, or how, or by whom, on this or any other studio film.
Yes there were rumors of a 300 million dollar budget and 450 million more on marketing, which would mean the movie actually needed something like 700 million domestic to break even...

Of course those numbers don't make any sense, so as you said, nobody knows.

There is also a lot of Hollywood accounting, where money that is supposedly spent on production and promotion actually moves from one pocket of the corporation to another, and production partners who use expenses and "losses" as part of strategy of tax shelters and breaks.

I mean, didn't you ever wonder why so many "co-financiers" have appeared in the last fifteen years, happily and repeatedly investing in big movies despite the high demonstrated risk and often marginal returns?

For example: regardless of the box office success of a movie, its later success on DVD (or whatever), cable, overseas etc matters a great deal not simply because of any profit to the studio but because it benchmarks the expected value of things like distribution rights to future films in the series or from the same production company. That value matters as collateral in securing loans from banks for future production. Studios are in the business of making films (duh), and keeping the lines of credit open from year to year is important.

Somebody's making money even on a lot of bombs, never mind "disappointments."

I explained those numbers weeks ago - a lot of the advertising in the $350m marketing figure was affiliated/branded advertising, i.e., Gillette razor ads with Justice League packaging artwork not paid for by the studio. Advertising spending on the movie itself was likely in the $150m range, for total production+advertising costs in the ballpark of $450m. As is stands, the movie will almost certainly lose money in theaters alone; when insiders say it might have reached the break-even point despite an under-$700m worldwide gross, they're almost certainly counting on streaming/home media rights to make up the rest later on - IMO.

But hey, DC can take solace in the fact that JL is now only $7m behind Thor: The Dark World. :p

JL is going to end up with about $230 million in North America. JL is going to make $183 million less than WW, so many people that went to see WW didn't show up for JL for whatever reasons.

Half of Wonder Woman movie's American audience straight up didn't show up for JL, so yeah it is pretty bad decrease. 45% drop is pretty huge.

Some females might have been put off by the news of the Amazons being sexualized and walking around half naked in JL, especially after the progress made in Wonder Woman with Patty Jenkins being praised for not filming the female main character like a porn star in her own movie.

I only was aware of any difference in some of the Amazon costumes because so much fuss was made about the stills online. Didn't notice them at all in the movie and I assume they were only on a few characters - the island scenes were mostly action-packed sequences with a lot of people n frame fighting hard and moving fast.

So, this will top out around 650 million before the cable, streaming rental and sales money is counted...and then there's merchandising and ancillary monies. Not a disaster at all... but maybe a near-death experience for the bean counters.

I was talking about all those Amazons wearing less clothing NEWS ARTICLES putting off female audiences more than what was actually in the movie. The controversy was pretty crazy.

That was in the "news" for like a day.

After two years of constant manufactured controversies, it's kinda silly to single out just one as the reason people were less inclined to go see the movie...

Finally saw the movie this week. I wasn't impressed. This is my least favorite of all the DC movies yet. I suppose it wasn't technically "bad" but it was painfully unmemorable. Gal Gadot is working hard at continuing her character's thread from Wonder Woman but she doesn't get enough screen time to really do it. I'll echo other reviewers saying that Ben Affleck feels like he's phoning it in, which is especially disappointing because I loved his take on Batman in Batman v. Superman. Aquaman was OK but I think he would have resonated better had they done the Aquaman movie first before putting him into Justice League. (I felt the same way about Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War.) The Flash was 50-50 for me. Half the time, I thought he was pretty funny (especially the look on his face while sitting in the Batmobile) but the other half I thought they pushed his schtick a little too far.

As for Superman, I finally realized how much I enjoy Henry Cavill's performance in the role. While I haven't appreciated Snyder's take on Superman for the most part, Cavill brings an easy charm to the role of Clark Kent that's very pleasing to watch. It's a shame that he & Lois Lane get so little screentime in which to deal with everything. I felt like there was a really good Man of Steel sequel buried somewhere underneath the rest of this, struggling to get out.

BTW, did anyone else think that Bruce Wayne looked younger in this movie than he did in the last one?

Every time they said Steppenwolf, I thought, "Gitcher motor runnin'....Head out on the highway". I really wasn't very impressed with this guy.

I feel like, if Joss Whedon had free reign from the beginning, just about every scene would have included a joke about that. "Why don't you come with me, little girl, on a magic carpet ride?"

It's doing better internationally than previous DC movies, which will be of great interest to the suits.

International box office is weird. The foreigners keep watching Pirates of the Caribbean & Transformers long after the Americans stopped caring.

Batman's gambit being that Superman's lust would overpower his anger.

I'm pretty sure we're talking about love, not lust.

It doesn't matter whose in charge if WB execs get in the way. Patty does have some cred with shutting them down as wasn't it reported one exec wanted to cut the No Man's Land scene from WW, which IMO is the defining act of the entire movie.

Whichever exec suggested that was a moron. Not only is that the best action scene in the film, it's really the only action scene in the film that I actually liked.

Eh, if her were at full power instead of being weakened from his battle with Batman he would've been in better shape to fight him. Like tossing him into space or something. Doomsday couldn't fly for some reason.

Even after fighting Batman, Superman still tried to do that and probably would have succeeded had the military not decided to nuke them both for some reason.

One thing that needs to be accepted when watching these Snyder movies is that he is trying to both make a traditional superhero movie and also deconstruct these heroes at the same time. If you simply can't accept this, you can't possibly enjoy these movies.

I enjoy them but I think the idea is kind of a mess. You can't deconstruct something that you haven't properly constructed in the first place.

Nevertheless, Snyder's movies have a distinct tone to them, for better or worse. For the most part, Joss Whedon's scenes blended in pretty well, so I couldn't say what was him or what was Snyder. It wasn't a "Frankenstein" movie in that respect. However, it does feel very watered down. If you're going to make a Zack Snyder movie, you need to commit to making a Zack Snyder movie.

Snyder's idea in BvS is that Batman as the self proclaimed protector of the world comes to the conclusion that the world is not safe with a Superman. This is a reasonable conclusion. The world is safer without an indestructible being among us. After the Doomsday fight, Batman realized that he was wrong. Not only is Superman a good person, a hero, so to speak, but he is also absolutely necessary to defend the world against super powered threats.

He should have already known this after Man of Steel since he has no idea whether or not there are any other Kryptonians still out there. While I understand his fear of Superman, I think it was already apparent that there are other potential superpowered threats out there that require a Superman-level of response.

Agreed. I didn't notice any change.

Do you think the Justice League movie will make more, if Superman is in the trailers, like this...

Edit: Just for fun... Will having 7 members appear in the movie and trailers helped, or having Green Lantern hurt its box office performance?

I can see that, yeah. Good point.

But those "skimpier outfits" were in the movie for like two seconds! They were only worn by those 4-6 Amazons that knocked a couple of columns. It was literary a blink-and-you-miss-it scene! Hippolyta and the rest of the Amazons fighting (and they were a lot more than those 4) had "proper" armor just like in Wonder Woman.

If that wasn't the case believe me I wouldn't be defending that at all. And if only Jessica Chastain had actually watched Justice League before she made that tweet. (Or maybe if she had watched another well known Snyder film.)

Apparently someone did point out 300 to Chastain and she said she thought that was stupid too. Fair point, but at least you can't claim that there's a sexual double standard going on.

I don't know how representative ITunes/Apple downloads are of the eventual release but according to this 'justice League' is out at towards the end of the month to officially download and there doesn't seem to be multiple versions in the offing.

Not that I don't like the theatrical cut but a longer 'Whedon' cut (A Snyder cut, particularly with a Junkie XL score is shooting the moon, at least to bring out by the time the film is due for home-video release), that includes some of the character cameos such as Willem Defoe's character & Iris West, as well as more Superman, if any would be welcome.

According to CBR, Amazon Germany has a listing for a 135 minute version of Justice League. I don't how trustworthy this is since the Amazons don't have the best reputation when it comes to this kind of stuff.
