Just WHAT was Pavel's JOB?

True. This version of Pavel was Wesley Crusher...a TNG homage.

In TOS, Pavel Chekov was there to bring in the teenage girl viewer. In TNG, Wesley was there to bring in, and did bring in, the teenage girl viewer. So is Wesley the homage or Chekov.

Seriously, Pavel was sort of a weird, wacky, and sometimes stuffy sort on TOS. Moreover, Chekov in TOS was a bright guy, and somewhat a protegee to Spock. The movie took hold of the more weird and wacky aspect of the character -- i.e. "Russian inwention," v's and w's switched -- and hyperbolized it, and it worked fine on screen.

...In some respects, the navigator was almost like an ops manager at times in the sense he was something of liaison between the bridge at other departments, IMO...

Hmmm....

I like that.

This may be why the similar position was called "Ops" in TNG. The "Ops" position was there in Voyager too, also handled by an Ensign, but NOT positioned near the helm.

We may have done a Trekker's fixit here, or at least figured something out that's been there all along. :p

I never really understood Data's or Kim's job either. What exactly does the Ops officer do?

Data was originally supposed to be the science officer, but since Brent Spiner didn't look good in a blue uniform, they created the position of ops officer to explain why he was in gold.

I wonder if they tested Brent with or without mime-face?

...My fanon will always have Navigation (helm) and Tactics (weaponry) next to each other on the bridge for the close interaction required between maneuvering and offensive/defensive activities.

Ummm...

In TOS the two positions were helm and navigation, and it seems they usually were the ones who fired the weapons.

In TMP Chekov was weapons officer, with a totally different position on the bridge.

The navigator's position was almost something of a jack o' all trades position in TOS. In "The Corbomite Maneuver," Navigator Bailey was also responsible for coordinating the phaser crews during battle simulations. Chekov frequently filled in for Spock at the sciences station when he was away from the ship or busy eating plomeek soup or whatever...

very good point about bailey..

He was brought aboard because everyone hated to do the ship announcements and he said he had a great diction. Unfortunately, his transmission was cut short and it turned out he only had a great dictionary.

I have honestly never understood what Chekov's job was. Sometimes he navigates (which makes you wonder what the hell Sulu's job actually entails), sometimes he fires phooooooton tooooooorpeeeeeeeeedoooooooeeeeeees. So I don't know.

I never really understood Data's or Kim's job either. What exactly does the Ops officer do?

Sulu is the helmsman.

In otherwords, Sulu is driving and Chekov is holding the map telling Sulu where to go. ;)
Oh good. I'm glad that the helm console can't accomplish both jobs 200 years from now.

Well, if we ignore previous Trek knowledge....I'd have no idea what the hell Chekov's job was on the bridge.

Other than 'have funny accent, be young enough for McCoy to make a pithy remark about'.
