Just WHAT was Pavel's JOB?

Okay, he's sitting next to the helmsman, but did anyone hear him at any point called the "navigator"?

We know from later trek the two roles seemed to have been combined, so it's possible that's already happened here.

If so, WHAT IN THE WORLD WAS HIS JOB? To occasionally get up and run to some other station and take it over?

I'm not even sure if he was being shown to be weapons officer...

Anyone who's seen the film more than three times and/or has a better memory than me willing to step in here and clear this up?

Alan Dean Foster's adaptation called him the "Chief Tactical Officer." Memory Alpha has him listed as navigator.

I believe the console he used in TOS was specifically called the Operations console. Perhaps, as an Ops officer, his duties ranged among various tasks regarding ship's operation, among which was navigation.

He's the navigator. Remember when he was plotting out course ideas and calculations on that big transparent board? But like any good Starfleet officer, he has knowledge in multiple fields. He was also the weapons officer, which would explain why he reported the status of the weapons to Kirk at the end of the movie as the Enterprise is about to get underway.

The navigator's position was almost something of a jack o' all trades position in TOS. In "The Corbomite Maneuver," Navigator Bailey was also responsible for coordinating the phaser crews during battle simulations. Chekov frequently filled in for Spock at the sciences station when he was away from the ship or busy eating plomeek soup or whatever...

In some respects, the navigator was almost like an ops manager at times in the sense he was something of liaison between the bridge at other departments, IMO...

You're right, Ops was only named in TNG-onward. Still, it's in the same place and the variety of duties seems the same or similar.

Sulu is the helmsman.

In otherwords, Sulu is driving and Chekov is holding the map telling Sulu where to go.

Data was originally supposed to be the science officer, but since Brent Spiner didn't look good in a blue uniform, they created the position of ops officer to explain why he was in gold.

The captain just called for an away team to go down to the planet, so I'm calling ahead to warn the transporter room to be ready, including requisitioning the replication of special equipment needed for the particular mission, and I'm calling Sickbay to make them aware to prepare for injuries specific to the planetary environment (including telling them what that environment is.)

Getting married, your spouse is coming to live on board, and you're going to need quarters for a couple rather than the single you have now? Inform Ops.

Huh, and they said the comms officer was the "glorified switchboard operator". Mix in a little Social Coordinator and you get Ops.


My fanon will always have Navigation (helm) and Tactics (weaponry) next to each other on the bridge for the close interaction required between maneuvering and offensive/defensive activities.

Don't many types of military aircraft have both a pilot and a navigator? Seems like Chekov has several duties folded into his position. Does seem that Tactical is his domain- he did come up with that move about using Saturn's magnetic field to hide Enterprise behind. It looks like it would be difficult for a helmsman to both handle the ship and weapons- such as during the battle at Vulcan.

Meh. Tactical is such a nice, succinct job title.
