Just watched Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Actually the ship would have been dumped out of the wormhole on it's own.

No, if I recall the novel correctly, the appearance of the asteroid - a target upon which to fire - was their only hope of escape! It was a lucky coincidence that the asteroid could be used.

Remember Decker's line that I only partially quoted: "Negative control from inertial lag will continue 22.5 seconds before forward velocity slows to sublight speed." It comes right after Kirk tells Sulu to reverse and go to impulse power and Sulu indicates no response. All indicating had the asteroid not been caught up with them in the wormhole the Enterprise would have slowed down on it's own to sublight speed and they would have control again.

He said The Motion Picture, not The Voyage Home.

Hey, I like TMP it's just that it's so.... painful. Drawn out, colorless, and just..., well, masturbatory.

I mean a several minutes long scene showcasing a model. GOD! JUST BOARD THE SHIP ALREADY AND GET ON WITH THE MOVIE!!!!

The presentation of the Enterprise and technology and our reaction to it is a large part of what Sci-Fi is and why I love this movie and why the scene works. And as Wise said he did it was so we get a proper perspective of how large the Enterprise is and then how small it is compared to V'ger.

Yes.

But EIGHT MINUTES?!!!!

Then start a thread about that movie.
Nah, everything that can be said here has already been said about all the movies.

As for the 8 minutes, one has to remember that this was the first Star Trek in 10 years, one couldn't hit the net to find pictures of the ship nor could one turn on bimbo..err spike TV to see trek all the time.

The actual length of the sequence from Scott activating the Travel pod to end is 6 minutes, not all of which is spent circling the ship, so while it's a lengthy sequence, it ain't 8 minutes circling the ship.

Like you've never wasted 8 minutes jacking off to porn.

I haven't, actually.

I don't watch porn.

Maybe that is the reason why you see your life as so empty... :p

Porn doesn't do anything for me. The women in it are rarely attractive to me (I prefer much more natural and "next door" looking women) and I'm not much of a self-gratifier either. I need a bit more of a connection.

As someone said earlier, it was not eight minutes. When I want to see sci-fi that is the kind of thing I like to see. I can see normal people interaction without going to the movies, let alone a sci-fi movie. New technology and how it is used and how it affects us is one of the greatest draws to sci-fi for me.

The 8 minute tour of Enterprise was one of the best parts of the film back in 1979. It was the first time the Enterprise was on the big screen.

I believe (in the film - I haven't read the novel for a very long time) the wormhole was going to disappear "naturally". The asteriod was drawn into the wormhole and was due to hit the Enterprise just before the wormhole disappeared.

Ilia says "Impact in twenty seconds" and Decker says something about inertial something-or-other something-or-other will continue for 22.5 seconds - this is while the time-distortion is going on. This leads me to suspect the destruction of the asteroid isn't related to the end of the wormhole.

Sorry, RyanKCR - I didn't notice you had mentioned this before I posted this...

It's amazing how often people forget this.

For me it was my first real introduction to Star Trek and I didn't even know it at the time. All I know is that I wanted to be aboard her and I was only 8 or so at the time.

Don't you mean the Gamma Quadrant

Yes.:bolian:

The actual length of the sequence from Scott activating the Travel pod to end is 6 minutes, not all of which is spent circling the ship, so while it's a lengthy sequence, it ain't 8 minutes circling the ship.

Add that to the other 2 minutes it takes showing us the Enterprise as it leaves space dock.

I don't care if Star Trek was off-screen for 20 years, the scene is too long. Could you imagine if George Lucas spent that long reintroducting us to a light saber or the Death Star?

George Lucas was doing something different. And he did have a long intro to the Star Destroyer. SpaceBalls parodied it. It was those long looks into what the future might look like got me hooked. If it is too fast to notice it what is the point of putting on screen?

Neither of which were (at the time) as iconic and beloved, or treated as a character, so it's not an apt comparison.

I'm not disagreeing that the scenes are long, but there's lots of films with lengthy sequences looking at something just because the subject is beautiful. I honestly don't think anyone would be complaining so much about these scenes if the rest of the film's pacing was better.

Hey, the point is the scene was just too long. When your audience notices that a scene is running too long, you've got a problem.
