Just watched Forbidden Planet

Pay attention to the very first lines spoken by crewmembers in Forbidden Planet, as one reports, "Ship on course, sir. We'll reach DC point at seventeen oh one" (1701). :D

And we all know that "Fontana" is Vulcan for "point." :shifty:

Hands down best Star Trek movie to date, with Galaxy Quest coming in a close second ;)

Seriously though it is a marvelous movie that still holds up, I still get a kick out of the Robot's alibi for the murder of the chief of the boat, was that it was tossing back a few with the ship's cook, Cookie :)

A great overall film, I still get creeps during the siege at the forcefield gate and the invisible ID monster, the whole build up is creepy, sound fx and music combined and then battle is so neat!

Vons

It was definitely one of the most impressive movies of its time. Really, one of the most successful space sci-fi horror movies of that era. Production values were excellent, definitely standing up to the test of time--impressive, considering it was made 10 years before Star Trek came about. I agree with MacDuff that there was an influence on Star Trek.

And of course, there's a direct connection--the actor Warren Stevens who played the ship's doctor was the Kelvan leader Rojan in "By Any Other Name".

I really hope they never do a remake of it, as I suspect a modern day producer won't do it justice. They'll just conjure up a massive load of CGI and wrap it around a distortion of the original story and weak acting performances.

Absolutely LOVE "Forbidden Planet". Watch it at least once a month, if not more. As much as the older sci-fi movies get bagged on-- largely do to them not looking flashy enough anymore-- there's a few of them just blow everything out of the water.

I guess I should watch Master and Commander again someday, I totally did not get a Trek vibe at all the first time around.

You could lift this script, recast with Trek characters - and there's a wonderful ST movie. The doctor's sense of wonder for exploring a new world, and his frustration when the ship has to get back to more military issues, are very strong, representative themes.

Forbidden Planet thread useless without caps:

Fresh from my copy:

Keep you CGI ya' damn kids, I've got the might of the Krell.

Party bot to the rescue:

Not to mention lots of dumba** action.

No, I hope that they never do a remake of it. It's perfect as it is. Besides that, I don't like remakes. They often suck and are also evidence of lack of imagination and new ideas.

i'm sure in twok there was a line saying something likethis is the kobyashi maru something out of altair Iv or something

The line is:

This is the Kobayashi Maru, we are 19 periods out of Altair VI, we have stuck a gravitic mine and are losing power...

They were going to remake FP, but that got stalled. If memory serves, I believe the creator of Babylon 5 was writing the script of the remake.

I also hope they don't remake Forbidden Planet, since the original film still holds up very well. I have it on DVD and watch it often.

^ I have a copy that I got...oh, maybe two years ago. It came in this cool tin and is packaged with a little robot. I think it's some sort of anniversary edition.

That's the 50th anniversary edition. I have that too. I love it.

Cakes488: it's still available at Amazon and other online stores. You don't have to get the anniversary edition--they have the regular, cheaper version, as well.
