Just finished TNG...do I need DS9/VOY to understand next movies?

I wanted to watch Generations and First Contact pretty soon, but I have not made it too far in DS9, and I have not started VOY.

I know TNG ends around 2370 and I guess my main question is this -- are there things in the DS9 and VOY storylines that play into future movies that I would not understand without the shows?

Thanks.

There may be extremely oblique references to DS( but nothing substantive. I thoroughly enjoyed them both but you will find a lot of naysayers regarding both as well. My advice is to avoid as much contamination as possible and see them anticipating a good time. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

How far are you on Deep Space Nine?

The only definite one is that Worf's arrival in DS9 season 4 refers to events in Generations. But if you don't know that spoiler by now I'd be astonished.

I think they tried to keep the movies casual, so that people who had never seen an episode of the TV shows could understand and enjoy them. Years ago I only cared about TOS and the movies and had never seen anything afterward until I saw First Contact on cable one day and loved it. Even though I'd never seen TNG it made complete sense, they kind of caught you up on what you needed to know (that Picard had been assimilated by the Borg in the past) in the first 5 minutes. I didn't end up watching DS9 until after I'd already seen all the rest of the movies. I'd say the biggest DS9 thing is the Defiant being in First Contact. It's probably cooler if you're familiar with the ship from having seen it on DS9 but it's not really that big of a deal if you haven't, you'd just consider it another ship.

One of the biggest mistakes in all of trek history in my opinion..to not tie the movies in together more intricately aside from passing references.

End of Season 2
Watch Season 3, after Distant Voices watch Star Trek Generations; after that movie continue to watch DS9. After "Explorers" start watching Star Trek Voyager. Someone already mentioned when to watch First Contact, but what I did was watch DS9 ep, then followed with Voyager.

You don't have to, although "Nemesis", in terms of timeline continuity is set after DS9 & Voyager, so with that one, you might want to wait, even though the part that is affected is a small part. Otherwise, "Generations" takes place around the time of DS9's "Defiant" episode, but doesn't play a role in the episode (although Jonathan Frakes did appear to promote the film), "First Contact" occurs around the end of DS9's Season 4, while "Insurrection" is around the middle of DS9's Season 7.

And aside from "Nemesis", Voyager doesn't play a major role in the Alpha Quadrant stuff because Starfleet, up till DS9's 6th season didn't know that Voyager still existed. And even then, Voyager was a long way from home, so anything affecting Starfleet in the Alpha Quadrant, really didn't affect Voyager in the Delta Quadrant.

I like Generations (for certain things) and First Contact (it's a fun movie) but honestly, I'd almost say, just if you are looking for completeness, watch Insurection and Nemisis before you watch DS9. The order might be off but the continuity doesn't really play into them and you'll want the palette cleansing of a whole good series after you watch them.
