Just finished MASS Effect

Well documented? Don't think I've ever talked about them.

Not on TBBS, no...

And you're right, I am prejudiced against Chocobo Races.

TBH I've only recently got into Final Fantasy 7 and there's a list as long as my arm of things that prevent it from living up to the fucking hype.

Chocobo Races, random battles (I swear to god that "swoosh!" sound makes me want to throw my PS1 out of the nearest window), shitty world map, inconsistent art design, ridiculously convoluted plot...

But, y'know, I still like it.

I despair at the casual gaming movement, I really do.

I've never been called a casual gamer before, I'm not sure whether to be insulted or flattered.

Look, sorry, I don't mean any offense, but I'm genuinely flabbergasted. You might as well watch a film, or (like you say) read a Choose Your Own Adventure novel. Or play MGS4.

Please tell me you're taking the piss. Please?
I wasn't seriously suggesting such a game design, no.

In the case of Mass Effect I find the characters and narrative developments far more interesting than the game mechanics, that's all.

It's interesting that you should mention MGS4 though, in that I generally enjoyed the gameplay sequences between the cutscenes in that game, whereas with Mass Effect I'm playing for those moments where I (minus selecting conversation options and the like) take my hands off the controls.

Sorry, that was just me nearly branching off into a rant about Nintendo. I have a lot of gamer rage these days.

Phew. Cuz, y'know, this is the internet. Sometimes you really can't tell.

I'd actually agree with you there (not to the same extent), but I still very much enjoyed the combat/exploration/sidequests stuff. It's what enriches the experience for me.

Or play Final Fantasy...

Your jRPG hate is well documented. Personally I just think you're a racist :p

Don't talk about the Final Fantasy franchise as though it's the be-all and end-all of the Japanese RPG genre. The only people who think that are the ones who haven't actually played a JRPG without the Final Fantasy branding. Point being: a distaste for Final Fantasy does not translate into a dislike of JRPGs.

I daresay I'm one of the more hardcore fans of the Japanese RPG on this board and I loathe Final Fantasy with every fibre of my being. I adored FF7, but the Final Fantasy franchise since has become more bloated and saccharine by the numeral, culminating in the hilariously stupid Final Fantasy XII - a game so lost and divorced from its own medium that it practically played itself. I can't wait to see how FF13 will continue this tradition. Maybe they could re-release The Spirits Within on Blu-ray, retitle it Final Fantasy XIII, throw in a title screen with a thing that says 'New game,' and call it a day.

Oh, and if you could find your way into not replying to everybody's posts with condescension, that'd be tops.

I didn't.

Um, I know him IRL. He does, in fact, hate jRPGs.

Oh, and if you could find your way into not replying to everybody's posts with condescension, that'd be tops.

If you dismount your high horse and stop pretending to be a moderator I might consider it.

You were replying to a poster expressing negative sentiment regarding Final Fantasy titles by saying that this dislike is symptomatic of a widespread dislike of Japanese RPGs. That point still remains. The fact that you know MilitaryCoo IRL is a matter of complete disinterest me, and there was no way I could've known. But thanks flor clearing that up :)

And no pretensions of modness here. Just callin' a spade a spade, is all.

No, I wasn't, as I've already clarified. If anything it was an injoke between me and the poster in question.

He never made any claims about anyone's like or dislike for jRPGs except mine. Perhaps you can quote the part of his post that refers to "widespread" dislike?

Okay, I was going to let this drop, but now I can't.

Here's you...

To which your apparent real-life friend replied...

And then you said...

MilitaryCoo expressed negative sentiment about Final Fantasy. You appeared to assume that a negative attitude towards FF = dislike of Japanese RPGs in general.

I was saying that it doesn't. Nothing more, nothing less. I don't care if you did the guy's bris - there was no way for me to know that you and he know each other in real life.

Do you get it now?

He displayed an established knowledge of my preferences. The fact that you jumped to the fanboyish defence of the genre doesn't change the fact that he made it clear that he was talking about MY dislike for the genre, and not implying that FF7 was in any way representative.

Do you get it?

It's not unreasonable for me to call you on the fallacy of that assumption. Let me say this again: there was no possible way I could have known that you and he know each other in real life.

That's fair enough, but once I'd clarified the situation, you repeated the assertion, and even claimed I hadn't refuted it (your subsequent edits notwithstanding).

Even if there was, the point I made about Final Fantasy not being the be-all and end-all of Japanese RPGs is still perfectly valid. :)

Absolutely 100% agreed. I'm not arguing with you on that point at all.

Do you get it now?

Thank you for condescending to explain it to me.

This is possibly the most exasperating argument I've had since the time I tried to explain to the guy at EB Games that there's really no need for him to ask me if I brought any games to trade in when he can see that both my hands are empty.

I made my point, stated my case, and clarified it several times. MilitaryCoo, nobody's talking about FF7 so what the hell are you on about? MisterGaribaldi, you get what ya give, eh? But you can argue with yourself now and if you wish for my input I'll just refer you back to the embarassingly inordinate number of posts I've made in this thread, stating then re-stating my position. Ciao.

Uh, great.
...........................

So, back to ME2, how the hell are BioWare going to carry on the storyline from ME1 saves (as they've said) without downplaying some pretty far-reaching consequences? Seems to me that this approach will restrict them somewhat.

I mean, they give you the freedom to change your Shepard's backstory, appearance and gender - but they still have a "canon" version of the character for spin off media, etc. I'm wondering if it would be easier for them to just make a few key decisions in the first game canonical and be done with it.

There's also the Sonic RPG that needs to come out soon too, but I suppose that's more of a side game than anything else.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, and yes the game is a DS game so its only 50-100MB. That and the game was completed a couple of months ago, due to be released 5th of September here in the UK.

I doubt it took up that much of their resources.

I don't know what to make of a Sonic RPG. No doubt BioWare will make a decent job of it, but it's never struck me as a universe that needs any real exploration (if you'll pardon the tenuous pun).

I just want to chime in with those who enjoyed this game. I found it to be incredibly enjoyable, and the first real game I've played that managed to successfully mix FPS and RPG elements and - most importantly - work it into a truly interactive story. I really felt like I was living the starring role in a cool sci-fi series, and it had some twists and turns that genuinely surprised the hell out of me.

Very much looking forward to ME2.

Agreed completely. The sci-fi geek in me LOVED living the role of Commander Shepherd and basically commanding my own starship and away teams at my own pace (till the end, anyway).

I used to be a pretty hardcore console RPG fan, but I've found it REALLY difficult to go back to RPGs with lots of reading and text boxes after Mass Effect.
