Just bought a record player, and uh... now what?

^ So where is it then? :p

Whoops forgot ~ here you go...

+ the embarrassing ones I left in the box :shifty:

Excellent, you have several of my favourite albums at the front there.

I would have left Atom Heart Mother in the box as well though :p

I like the cow

^ I have an SL1700 as well. It's the original though not a MKII. Both fine decks, quite similar to the SL1200 DJing deck but with lower torque.

Hey, nice to meet another 1700 user!
Unfortunately mine is having problems right now, i've burnt out a compnent on the printed circuit board or something, it only plays at 45rpm right now. It's not mechanical for sure as the 45 setting works no problem.

Taking it to a repair specialist is likely going to cost as much as buying another one though, I only paid £70 for mine, so i'm mulling over simply buying another off ebay and keeping mine for spares, or perhaps switching the whole PCB from the new one into mine, as I am rather attached to it, even though the new one would be exactly the same.

Alternatively I can learn to become an electronics expert, trace the fault, buy the compenent and fix it myself, i'm liking that option less. Although tracing faults is something i've been meaning to learn how to do.

Sounds like fun. :)

Mine needs a repair too. I have to replace the elastic band that allows the arm to auto-return.

I think I'd also like to acquire a better cartridge and maybe upgrade the audio-out cables. I've been reading about that on the audiophile site listed further upthread.

Sweet! Now I'm tempted to scan all of my spines, though my collection isn't all that great. It's mostly whatever I've been able to pick up at thrift stores.

Speaking of portable players -see what I did there?- Back in the 'boom box days' I had a portable battery operated no need to turn over the record-player like this one:

Eight D-cells wouldn't let you listen to a lot of records though :rommie:

That's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.

Somehow I don't think he was getting into vinyl with the intention of listening to it on i-tunes...

Ditto, though having your favourite albums mp3'ed isn't necessarily a bad thing for the portable player.

Or you could avoid the hassle and just download the stuff. Unless it's something super-rare that no one else has.

Yes, if I want to listen to digital, I'll just listen to a nice remastered digital file. Listening to vinyl is a special, ritualistic experience. It's apples and oranges, and I like both.

Hmmm, I've been in and out of Thrift Shops and Catholic Charities a lot lately, maybe I should just rebuilding my vinyl collection here and there.

^ Honestly, that's the most fun way to do it anyhow. Plus, it doesn't break the bank. Though it can become an addiction. You don't want to become like Harvey Pekar. ;)

There's good money to be made if you know what you are looking for as well.

If I had the time to vist all the garage sales etc I see, i'm sure I could make a nice little sideline in ebaying vinyl.

^ True enough, though I was disappointed when I found out that the original Star Wars LP I got in mint condition with the poster and inserts still in tact seems to fetch the same price on ebay as I paid for it. Oh well!

Sorry to hear that, Canadave. Hopefully it won't be too long before you can bask in that warm analog glory. :techman:

Now my love of vinyl has been re-ignited I definately have to start doing that

Canadave ~ how's it going? Is it working? Tell us!!

Alas, I accidentally ordered the wrong size of needle, so I have to send it back in exchange for one that fits. More waiting. :(

Easy done. Man ordered a new lead for our laptop and got the wrong one ~ I asked him if he thought the ad was 'mis-leading' :guffaw:
(I like laughing at my own jokes ok!:p)

Man, now I'm really kicking myself

Last year one of the older schools in the area was shut down, and when they were cleaning out the basement storage they had a ton of old record players, film projectors, reel-to-reels, film strip projectors, and slide projectors and old microscopes. Someone offered me a chance to take what I want-- since was all going to the city dump, should have took them up on the offer and snagged a few of those record players. Who knows, might have been able to make a dime or two on the other stuff.

Yep ~ feel my kick too:lol: Vinyl is definately making a strong re-surge. I've even unearthed my lava lamp for the total 70's effect :shifty:

Heh - I've got mine out too :rommie:

Add some incense and all I've got to do is nick some of my son's dope and we can have a real Vinyl Friday

Count me in!

But I think I might just have some cheap wine out of a box -for that seventies feel!

It must be Leibfraumilch! After a dinner of prawn cocktail, chicken kiev and black forest gateaux
Oh and we must wear flares ~ am inspired to go to Ebay to buy a kaftan :guffaw:

No no ~ even better! I'm going to melt a candle into a wine bottle too

I'm thinking; home made candles will have to do :D

I don't think I could fit into any of my clothes from back then though... I do have a hand coloured T-shirt, perhaps that?

You should really stop needling people like that.

But I adapted it to suit my humour:p

Anyway guys, it's tres late, so I can count on seeing you tomorrow evening for Vinyl Friday, Yes?
And I think I may well peruse some shops beforehand.
Nite, x

Hey hey ~ and guess what I found at the charity shop today...

Admittedly 2 bought for the artwork alone, but you can't go wrong with a bit of Meatloaf. Sade, Judie Tzuke (great scrabble name) and a compilation which has 'Broken Wings' by Mister Mister and 'Kayleigh', Marillion's finest, and only, hour ;)
Am looking forward to Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Centre of the Earth too.
So are we up for 'Vinyl Friday' guys? Lava lamps and kaftans at the ready... Rock on:biggrin:
