Just bought a record player, and uh... now what?

^ I have an SL1700 as well. It's the original though not a MKII. Both fine decks, quite similar to the SL1200 DJing deck but with lower torque.

Hey, nice to meet another 1700 user!

Yeah, as far as I know, the 1700s actually use the same motor, though they have a much heavier platter in comparison to the 1200. The heavier platter is a great advantage for home users, if only because used units are less likely to have been used for DJing. The 1700's are also much much cheaper than their insanely popular 1200 brothers. :)

I prefer mine from an aesthetic POV though, I don't like the black front on the MKII.
Yeah, I can definitely see that argument, though I do enjoy the look of mine, and it's nice to have controls outside of the dust cover.

I believe the two decks are essentially the same except for the motor and a few minor differences in the size of the platter etc.
That sounds right to me. I think the only other real difference (aside from the various tweaks and improvements associated with a newer generation) is that the MKII is Quartz controlled.

But all of this stuff is getting into the pretty finicky. We're talking about stuff that's going to give you within single percentage points of improvement in quality. But without those little details to finagle over, we wouldn't be audiophiles, would we? ;)

^ :D

In all truthiness, I'm just an armchair audio geek. Or, spelled another way, pretentious poseur. :D

Unfortunately mine is having problems right now, i've burnt out a compnent on the printed circuit board or something, it only plays at 45rpm right now. It's not mechanical for sure as the 45 setting works no problem.

Taking it to a repair specialist is likely going to cost as much as buying another one though, I only paid £70 for mine, so i'm mulling over simply buying another off ebay and keeping mine for spares, or perhaps switching the whole PCB from the new one into mine, as I am rather attached to it, even though the new one would be exactly the same.

Alternatively I can learn to become an electronics expert, trace the fault, buy the compenent and fix it myself, i'm liking that option less. Although tracing faults is something i've been meaning to learn how to do.

^ So where is it then? :p
...

Whoops forgot ~ here you go...

Ah, alrighty then...remember dear, you're talking to somebody whose idea of a perfect evening involves things like this, so I may need a bit of coaching on the culture. ;)

(fun fact: I was at that game, in those bleachers, and am somewhere in that very clip, but you can't see me :( )

See now I'm not even going to click on the link. Anyway honey, it's nearly 5am and my cat is telling me to go to bed. Nite all

You'd have been better going with a usb turntable like the ones Numark are doing. It outputs over RCA (phono) cables at line level (no preamp required) and also has a usb connection to directly digitise audio from a record and feed it into your computer where it can be recorded with a program like Audacity or suchlike. Then you can put it into itunes or whatever.

Somehow I don't think he was getting into vinyl with the intention of listening to it on i-tunes...

Ditto, though having your favourite albums mp3'ed isn't necessarily a bad thing for the portable player.

Speaking of portable players -see what I did there?- Back in the 'boom box days' I had a portable battery operated no need to turn over the record-player like this one:

Eight D-cells wouldn't let you listen to a lot of records though :rommie:

Well, it wouldn't play (records) if you carried it around (there is a BIG button on the bottom of it that stops attempts to play records once the whole machine is lifted (unless you have some duct tape of course)).

But the record player was actually pretty good -and of course: very portable ;)
