Ju'Day-Class Deck Layout

I'm a fan of Chakotay's Maquis ship, it just a good rugged look to it that appeals to me. There also appears to be several variants, of different sizes, from the fighter Ro piloted in "Preemptive Strike" to Chakotay's ship.

So I set about developing another variant, which was slightly larger and more comfortable that Chakotay's, and classed it as a Ju'Day-Class (Gamma-Type). It was designed for civilian use, as a small multi-purpose craft. A lot was packed into such a small ship, but it has proven popular with the crews that use the Gamma-Type.

On a week when I was off ill I managed to put together a deck plan for the Gamma-Type, and thought I would share it with everyone here. They were done just with Paint so they're not as fancy as other works on here.

Wow. I didn't realize that these ships were that big.

Are you going to list the specific dimensions for the craft as well?

Not sure about other ships of the class, I just felt that the design is very robust and would be ideal for civvies, so I made it a little bigger and packed in as much as I could (including the galley sink).

Working on the specs, and will get them up when I'm happy with them.

Thank you.

Can't take credit for Amorin though, that is the work of the very talented FltCpt.Bossco over on STPMA. I developed the species, from a throw away line in a DS9 episode where a Klingon boasts about killing a Benzenite by tearing off his breathing tubes.

I wanted a pretty bizarre species for my XO, and that fit the bill perfectly, so there we have it.

I've had Captain Leijten up already, but will go through all of the crew over time. Next up will be Lieutenant Commander Daezan.

Bry,
I was noticing on Deck 4...

where item #49 is a Hydroponics Bay. And I see a Gym and Rec Room on other decks.
You apparently are designing this for some long term Missions ?

Have a good Day ! :)

It was an idea to make her sustainable, so that if need be she could carry on for a while on her own without a drop in performance. I also thought that the ship could be used for a multitude of purposes, from shipping cargo (with her three good sized holds), to being tasked with security duties (hence the torpedo launchers), to scientific investigations (where the lab and hydroponics bay would come in handy), to ferrying passengers (which is why there are four comfortable guest suites, the rec room and gym).

Also with the ship being designed for civilian usage, I thought they would prefer as much comfort as possible.

That was just my thoughts on it though.

I've yet to find dimensions that suit it, but thought I would put up some specs for now.

PERFORMANCE
Standard Cruise: Warp 5 (warp speed restriction)
Maximum Cruise: Warp 7
Maximum Rated: Warp 7.9 (for 15 hours)

TACTICAL
Phasers: 2 x Type-VIII Phaser Cannons (wing mounted), 2 x Type-VII Phaser Banks (dorsal and ventral)
Torpedoes: 4 x Mk-4b Photon Torpedo Launchers
Torpedo Stock: 14 x Photon Torpedoes
Shields: Type-9 Hull Conformal Shielding Grid

CREW
Crew Capacity: 14 (maximum)
Passenger Capacity: 0-8
Evacuation Limit: 80

TRANSPORTATION
Auxiliary Craft: 1 x Small Personnel Shuttle, 2 x Workbee Maintenance Craft
Transporters: 1 x Personnel Pad, 1 x Cargo Pad
Evacuation: 2 x 11-Person Escape Pods

I like most of those specs, but the forward torpedo launchers are a bit of an issue. Those fancy lumps don't really look as if they would have physical openings in them, and OTOH they look quite a bit like the business ends of various handheld Trek rayguns - and basically identical to the wingtip mounts of the ship.

IIRC, the only weapons this ship type ever fired were the wingtip rayguns in "For the Uniform" and aft torpedoes plus a rooftop phaser in "Caretaker pt I" and a ventral aft phaser in "Caretaker pt II". The ship doesn't necessarily need forward-facing torpedo launchers. Even the aft ones could be a Maquis retrofit, although I'd hate to be B'Elanna Torres when Eddington comes and tells me "I want two starship-standard torpedo tubes installed in the middle of the impulse engine cluster, where the machinery is probably more tightly packed than anywhere else in the ship, and I want it done for tomorrow's big raid - on all the three ships".

Perhaps the opening at the very bow of the ship could be a torpedo launcher, if one is needed?

(Also, where will the shuttle be carried?)

Bry,

HA, well... I hope you have thick skin !
But, such is necessary when displaying an "idea". I do remember you saying this design was a "variant", and for all general purposes, that could be a start from scratch.

I had also thought to mention a few changes, but.... I'll limit my comments. One thing I do see is, that if you used a Conveyor type loading system on your Torpedo feed, you could house a lot more than just fourteen, in the existing floorspace indicated. (I figure 42)
YES !... that's a positive and supportive comment !

Have a good Day ! :)

(Also, where will the shuttle be carried?)
On deck 4 (see above) #39 is the launchbay. It has bomb-bay doors and deploys a shuttle (of no larger than 5 meters) in the same way that the NX-Class did.

I did these plans for an idea I had brewing about a civvie ship and (small) crew on the edge of Federation space, taking on a variety of different jobs, etc. This was a ship the Captain had bought and had had refitted. The launchbay, hydroponics and holo-simulator were originally smaller cargo holds that were refitted for other purposes.

The ship probably could easily have a larger crew, by removing some of the non-essential facilities, but I had wanted the ship to feel like a very real home for her crew, with provisions for whatever they might need. But for a civilian setting, a smaller crew just made sense to me. If the Maquis got their hands on it, they could likely pack several dozen people into it.

Interesting - this is the first I've heard reference of this ship being of the "Ju'Day" class, and after having done some googling, I found lots of people using it. Does anyone know the origin of this name? IIRC, it was never mentioned on-screen. From a novel or graphic novel maybe?

As far as I'm aware it was never given a proper class name. Ju'day is after a member of the production crew called Juday. Or at least that was what I read somewhere on the interweb.

Memory Beta, our last best hope for borderline-sorta-semicanon, gives the same "Repression" reference as everybody else - which, as we see from that crew roster screencap, is incorrect.

Amusingly, Memory Beta also speaks of "Condor class", a name that AFAIK appears nowhere outside my desk drawer work Hobbyist's Guide to UFP Starfleet, and is intended to be the name of the class in Starfleet service - not in civilian service where the "original" name Ju'Day still rules supreme. That's a pairing of sorts: in that desk drawer realm of mine, the smaller variant of the ship is Peregrine in Starfleet service (a good candidate for the unseen courier from "Heart of Stone", better IMHO than the attack fighters we see later on), but Oku'Day in the original civilian guise. :p
