JRPG enthusiasts: When (if ever) did Square 'fall off' for you?

Like I said, haven't played their games - I just say what I see on the box (or the intro screen).

I'm just correcting a common misconception. Using Demon's Soul as an example, all Atlus did was translate and advertise the game in the US. On the flip side the game was published by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan over in Japan.

FFVIII - Man that Obel Lake quest is a pain in the ass!

Gone all the way through it to the bit where you're following the trail of red rocks. Paying the price for not having 'Enc-None' yet so constantly interrupted with random encounters. Decided to visit a few old haunts to pick up the necessary GF points to get Diablos' 'Enc-None' before I have another crack at it.

Going back to the PS2 emulation - Interesting

Speaking of which, now over 50 hours in, and towards the end of disc 3. This playthrough has just reaffirmed for me that VIII is indeed my favourite FF.
Don't know why it isn't everybody's. It's a fracking masterpiece.

The GF and Junction combat systems really turned a lot of people off.

And it's not that the game wasn't relatively well-received; it sold well and got 90%+ reviews with most major gaming publications at the time.

I didn't really like it that much, never finished it. Then again, I'm one of the few people who seems to love FF IX. For me, that was the last FF game that felt like it was related to an old-school, NES-era FF game.
