JRPG enthusiasts: When (if ever) did Square 'fall off' for you?

If Square are going down the 'remaster' route, and it sounds as though they definitely are for something, then I'd hope it's X and/or XII, if only because I can't be bothered re-plugging in my old PS2, so this is a great way of having VII-XII (barring XI) all on the PS3.

It really wouldn't surprise me though if it turned out being VII. That would probably p1ss me off, unless it came bundled with VIII!

Speaking of which, now over 50 hours in, and towards the end of disc 3. This playthrough has just reaffirmed for me that VIII is indeed my favourite FF.

FFXI is already on PS3. You can download an emulator of the PS2 HDD. I play it all the time.

Oh, good, well, that's a small handful now who'd like a VII remake! :)

And, yeah, they'd have to ignore all those tie-ins. Crisis Core wouldn't really be an issue, I guess... I mean, it's fairly close to the story laid out during those extra cutscenes in VII. But they should just straight-up remake/re-translate the original game and maybe toss in another Weapon or two for funsies and pay no heed to all that extra material that wasn't very good anyways.

VIII is a game I have a lot of nostalgia for. But I cannot call it one of my favorites - I am not fond of the GF system or the quirky Edea story.

Don't know why it isn't everybody's. It's a fracking masterpiece.

I respect everyone's right to their opinion, so I can appreciate that it's not everyone's, but personally, I completely agree. In terms of the story, it truly is a masterpiece. I'm just at the end of disc 3, and even though I've gone through the game before, I don't think I've ever enjoyed it as much as I have this time around.

Not all PS3's are backward compatible though.

From what I understand, if you purchase a PS1 Classic off of PSN, it downloads the PS1/2 emulator that was removed after they discontinued the 80 gig systems.

While I haven't tried it myself, I believe you can restore backwards compatibility by doing so.

Anyways, I'm going through the original Parasite Eve right now and I definitely think it could benefit from a remake. Now would be the perfect time too with The Third Birthday right around the corner.

I'm pretty sure there was actually hardware in the original PS3's to support the PS2 backward compatiblility that is no longer there.

There used to be hardware (in the first release) but they eventually got rid of the hardware and put software emulation in its place. The 80 gig ps3s had this (I know for a fact that this is the case because this is the type of PS3 I own). The ones after the 80 gigs got rid of it all together. Wiki has a list of all the various combos

I wouldn't use the word masterpiece exactly, but in general terms I'm in agreement. A great game, with a unique tone, story, and feel. The "school" atmosphere still feels fresh and unique when compared to the all of other "ragtag group" Final Fantasies. My favorite part is the "assassination mission" at the end of Disc 1, just a great great set-piece. Close runner up: the battle of the Gardens.

That's a tough call, I think both of those set-pieces were superb. The battle of the gardens was spectacular, but the assassination mission was incredibly tense as it leads to Irvine taking his shot.

Still at the backend of disc 3, doing some grinding to get the components for the top-level weapons. Got Squall's, Rinoa's and Zell's so far. Was going to have a bash at knocking over the giant cactuar, but quickly reconsidered when I saw that the bloody thing's got 360k HP! Perhaps a job for tomorrow, I'm too tired right now!

Um... what? That doesn't sound right.

If that were the case, EVERYBODY would have PS2 emulation on their PS3s. All it would cost them would be 5 bucks (or however much the cheapest PS1 classic costs on the PSN).

Not to swerve the topic into the ditch too much, but I was thinking yesterday that maybe JRPGs in general are falling off, or really, they're a all but dead. It's a sad thought, but it seems like there just isn't a market for them. Even the Japanese-made console RPGs seemed to be grasping for the Western fruit.

Kinda sad, really.

They really are all but dead - they've failed to innovate (I mean actually innovate) for years now and they're pretty much circling the drain as a result. When you have games like Fallout, Mass Effect, Dragon Age all kicking ass and taking names, a slow ass game based on a formula from the 80s isn't really all that appealing any more.

Not to mention the stories that BioWare and Bethesda are telling in those games are lightyears beyond the standard JRPG story. Yeah, they have their tropes, too, but they are still utterly engaging.

Does anyone know how JRPGs are faring in Japan itself, though? The one time I went to Japan, I remember going into a toy store and not recognizing a single video game I saw. Literally every single cover had some anime character on it. They do have very different tastes.

And Japan's been imitating Western media for a long time, just folks in the US like to imitate Japan. It kinda goes back and forth, lol.

Doesn't help that the best two producers of JRPGs, Square and Enix finally merged, thereby removing that competitive element that kept each honest in the golden years of the genre.

Oooh, speaking of Atlus, has anyone played Dokapon Kingdom? :) I would agree that they're definitely doing different stuff than the norm.

Nah - haven't played much of theirs. Tried Demon's Souls and that was pretty much the polar opposite of fun and watched a roommate play Disgaia years ago which looked amusing, but that type of tactical game just doesn't hold my interest for long. Not a lot of their stuff blows me away, but I can see why people dig it.

Demons Soul wasn't developed by Atlus, it was developed by From Software. Atlus just published the game in the United States. Disgaea isn't an Atlus game either, its a NIS game.

Persona, Shin Megami Tensei and Devil Survivor are some Atlus games.
