Joker Origin Story Announced

Did he turn to Netflix, or did Netflix pay him a bazillion dollars as they continue to obsess over winning a best picture Oscar?
What I heard is he couldn't get a studio to make it so he turned to Netfix. With their money issues and Fox consumed by Disney I wonder how long until it is hard to even get these movies on tv. Especially if you don't got a legend like Scorsese wanting to make it. Plus it would be nice to see some non brand name blockbusters. The next Indepence Day,Speed,Forrest Gump etc. Jason

Perhaps if original movies stopped flopping at the box office, more would be made. We are to blame.

Is this bad or good?
Good or bad for who? It just means people seem to really love the movie, but its people who've seen it early or at an early screening at this point. The general audience probably won't be voting until late on Saturday.

The SPEED and INDEPENDENCE sequels reeked, but they're still brand names.

If you must remake a movie, hire Scorsese. Nobody does it better.
I was talking more about their orginal movies than the sequels. I dredd the Gump inevitable sequel following his kid over next 40 years where he keeps having to call out his dad's racism that clearly be their if Gump was a real person growing up in a less idealized version of the past missing the point of the first film. Get a time machine and go back, appropriately enough, to the 1980s. We live in the era of megabusinesses and franchises.

Even then... Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Superman, James Bond... the 80s was pretty littered with brand name blockbusters... or block buster wannabes trading on a brand name... *looks over at the He-Man movie, shivers*

The big difference was in between those blockbusters other kinds of movies would be released that weren't just big blockbusters, with smaller budgets. That landscape is all gone.

Fewer films are released now, meaning that studios cannot afford to loose money on as many projects any more. Each film is far more of a risk now.

Television in one form or another is becoming the go-to for a lot of ambitious filmmaking - the more intelligent audiences are easily reached there, and the economics make a lot more sense I'm mildly surprised if it's true that Scorsese had no choice - Tarantino continues to do well on the big screen.
I'm fine with things being this way. I only go to see a movie in a theater if it's a big spectacle movie, like a superhero movie, or a Star Wars or Star Trek, stuff that really needs to be seen as big a screen as possible. For the smaller movies, like the stuff from Scoresese or Tarantino, I usually wait and rent the digital version on Amazon, or watch it on one of the other streaming services I subscribe to.
I might got to see some of the smaller stuff if it's something I really, really want to see, but that's pretty rare for me.

Well, so much for this movie being a flop - trending for $94 million opening weekend. I don't think the creators could have imagined this in their wildest dreams.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion here about it.

I still think Ledger is the best Joker. This Joker is very pitiful and broken for most of the film. If they ever did a sequel I would love to see a realistic Batman pop up (who would also be equally crazy in his special way).

Batman IS crazy... the dude has funneled all of his rage and grief into a one man war on crime dressed as a bat. He even uses kids in that war. That's fucked up. We just don't like treating the character that way because he's the hero.

What was fascinated by Joker was that he was pitiful and broken but, in the end, it was embracing his madness that gave him strength.

The Ledger Joker is great, no doubt, but, it's not a fair comparison, as he was fully formed when he steps into the Dark Knight and this movie was an origin.
