Joker Origin Story Announced

Well, this will encourage the studios to invest in more inventive versions of these superhero sagas that we seem to be stuck with for a few cycles yet...

Yeah, we'll get Nolan making his version of Guardians where they're just a delusional Biker Gang on Earth who think they're aliens...

BTW, where were all the above-the-line Oscars for whatever it was Marvel did this year?

Ever since Scorsese and Coppola said their comments, the Academy wouldn't dare nominate them for anything without offending their own. Endgame getting a VFX Nom was all they'd allow.

This is knee-jerk non-sense. There is no indication that Marvel is changing course based on the success of Joker.

Couldn't hurt them, though. At some point people like Feige want peer recognition.

And, of course, the message to ambitious and well-known actors of the kind that Marvel often courts is that the "other team" is where actors get awarded for their work. Ledger, Phoenix...

Outside of a couple of actors, I'm not sure I could tell you anyone in Marvel movies. I usually go in and bed down for a two hour nap. :guffaw:

They already got that for making CBM history with Black Panther's Best Pic Nom.

The message is that they get it if they just use the characters' name but otherwise not the character.

IE, imagine if someone made a movie called "Scarlett" and it claims to be about Scarlett O'Hara but it's really about some poor cockney street girl.

...and that's not going to happen with giant purple video game characters, iron guys blasting things, more explosions and fat, drunk Thor.

Yes, but dont remind a certain person of that. His butt is a-hurtin' big time after Joker achieved what no 2019 MCU release (especially the "awweeesssome an' epic Endgame!!!!") could not, and never had even a whisper of a chance of doing.

Extremists on both sides of an issue are irritating. Did it hurt you severely when Black Panther was nominated?

BTW what an AWFUL, AWFUL speech by Phoenix at the Oscars. Congrats on your Oscar buddy, please never speak again.

It will happen for SURE. He probably won't win anything in the short term, but he'll be getting a lifetime achievement award in 10-15 years, the same way Albert Broccoli did.

Honestly, I don't usually care for awards or awards shows. The only thing that irritated me about the whole sequence of events was the folks who claimed it would somehow invalidate the award if Phoenix won. Or, the one guy, who claimed that the only way a "superhero-in-name only" movie could win an Oscar was because a superhero movie that he liked had been nominated first.

I mean, congrats to Phoenix. But his winning an Oscar doesn't change my world, my viewing habits or what I think of the MCU.

Which, thus far, has made no sense. Joker, as a character, has been presented in so many different iterations, both with Batman and without, that the whole "in name only" is pretty much gatekeeping style BS that doesn't recognize that comic books are a medium that allow for multiple different storytelling types and reinventions of characters.

IE, it won't happen as long as he remains unashamed of the comics instead of selling out.

Selling out, telling an INO story and pandering to the Academy? I'm glad the MCU doesn't do that.

The comics never made him into some populist hero of the lower classes, and both Phoenix and Phillips admitted he's not really the Joker anyways.

You and I must have read some different comics then. At least Injustice used him as a martyr and populist hero against Superman's regime.

Regardless, the point stands-comics are designed as a flexible medium to tell lots of different stories within. If one style or character doesn't work then move on to the next one. Joker has been that character who has flexed and moved with the times. Let's not pretend that he is a static character who only recently has been changed by Phoenix and Phillips. They are doing what comics have always done-adapted.

A retroactive one. One of the key reasons you have nine nominees most years now is that the Oscars wouldn't put TDK in the top five. If it were still five now, perhaps JOKER might not have made 2019's cut. To not nominate TDK is an insult, especially after it won the Ronald for Best Picture that year. (While Best Supporting Actor was Tom Wilkinson for MICHAEL CLAYTON, who beat out fellow nomineesOldman, Aaron Eckhardt and even Ledger for TDK.)
I'm sure this makes sense to someone. Unfortunately, that someone is not me...

Feige already sold out.

How?

After causing the whole mess and becoming a martyr just for a sick laugh.

They never went THIS far, not even White Knight.

And there's also their own comments of how he isn't the Joker.

I doubt it was two hours of "bear wrestling".

I saw the movie, for the most part it was.
