As you know, I hate the War Doctor with a passion. Or rather, Moffat's ego-centric decision to create a secret Doctor that could just as easily had been Nine or Eight.
However, I've always maintained that John Hurt more than sold the part. He had to play OldWho itself, in a way, and in that regard, his performance is an extraordinary achievement.
I really, really hope the best of recoveries for him. He's a screen legend, and I wish there's still more from him to come.

Very sad news indeed. He is such a talented, not to mention prolific, actor. I can only hope for the best for Sir John.
I always thought pancreatic cancer was one of the uglier of the cancer beasts, but then again I don't really know. In any case, all the best to him. I hope he recovers.

It is. A lot of the time pancreatic cancer can't be detected until its too late. I had an aunt who died of it several years ago, though I guess the average public would recognize it as the cancer Patrick Swayze died of.
This is pretty crappy news.
For me, he first burst on the scene in Alien (see what I did there?).
I love the War Doctor. I can't think of a part of his that I've seen in which he wasn't excellent.

Saw him first in "Midnight Express" as "Max", and have enjoyed him ever since. As Emperor-Tibereus and others have said, he is a giant! "Early Stages" does not happen that often, so there is every reason to be optimistic!

I wouldn't wish pancreatic cancer on anyone. Well, maybe that guy who kidnapped all those women in Ohio(?) a few years back. Someone like that. And there are a few people that I wouldn't cry over if I found out they had it, but I'm rambling. Sucks. Sucks, sucks, sucks. Only good thing about it is that he's had a fairly full life; it isn't like he's 40 or 25 or something. Here's wishing him the best and hoping he beats the odds.
I knew someone who had cancer. Up until about a week before their death it seemed as though they would defy the facts about their type of cancer. Sadly, the facts won out.
My sister was like that. First it seemed like we were going to lose her in early Summer, then she started responding well to treatment, and looked like she was going to beat it, and then throughout the Summer and into late Fall she was living a normal life, and one day she just fainted in late Fall, and she never regained consciousness.
That's great...if the shit stays gone. Let's hope it does.
