"John Carter of Mars" Moving Ahead!

it looks good. i'm not sure about the actors though. Taylor Kitsch doesn't feel like John Carter. Lynn Collins doesn't feel like Dejah Thoris. its hard to get a sense of them from the trailer. maybe its all the clothing :p

Kitsch seems to be too much of a kid to be John Carter. I always had the sense that he had a fair bit of life under his belt before being mystically transported to Mars. James Purfoy, who is Kantos Kan in this movie, is more my idea of Carter - someone who has some mileage, and it shows. Also damn sexy. Not into the Twilight kind of guy.

Lynn Collins does seem like Dejah Thoris to me, although I originally expected them to cast someone more exotic, like Moon Bloodgood (who of course is busy with Falling Skies).

I hope this movie is a success, and that they follow it with my favorite ERB character, Carson of Venus. I always liked that series the best! Moon Bloodgood would also be a good Duare. I guess that actress is a stand-in for how I envision all ERB sci fi heroines. :rommie:

wow we finally agree on something. I know moon bloodgood would have been an awesome choice for that role. and I wish she was wearing less than what she is. like she does in the comics and book covers. to bad hbo did'nt pick this up as a tv series.

i wouldn't give up hope on a Venus film just yet. i mean, A Princess of Mars has been in development hell for a long long time.

never did get to read the venus books. I just wish they would get around to putting them in e form.

same here. for awhile the director of Sky Captain was attached and after he left i just figured, well this is never going to get made.

Would like to see what his take on Burroughs would look like.

While Sky Captain may have had its faults, you can't deny that there was a lot of imagination behind it.

Jon Favreau was attached to direct after Kerry Conran departed. Robert Rodriguez was attached before either of them. This was when the project was still in development at Paramount, with Harry Knowles of AICN coming aboard as one of the producers.

Ugh, it's bad enough having a Knowles quote on the cover of the Blu-Ray for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Glad he hasn't been able to get in the business producing movies.

I don't know why they don't just call it Princess Of Mars.

The trailer didn't overly excite me, but it didn't turn me off, either. There are some interesting images in there.

Weeeeeird.
There are far weirder Mars images than that.

And there's more where those came from. :mallory:

Knowing nothing about the source material, Princess of Mars sounds like a movie trying to appeal to young girls, and was probably rejected for that reason.

Princess of Mars
A Disney film
Yeah, how could there possibly be a misunderstanding? ;)

Jasmine, Ariel, Snow White tackle the Martian Terrain.

Plus which, it was the title of the book.

Doesn't matter. As others have pointed out, a Disney film with the word "Princess" in the title sends all the wrong marketing signals . . .

And "Mars," arguably, sounds old-fashioned and corny these days. Like Marvin the Martian or My Favorite Martian or "Mars Needs Women."

They should just call it "Barsoom" and be done with it.

But then what the hell is Barsoom? There's a word with all the meaning (to our dear public) of Kwyjibo.

Surprisingly good trailer, for something that seems to be aimed at the Twilight crowd.
The Harry Potter crowd, rather.* Stanton name-checked the Barsoom series as his Harry Potter, after all. The film does not look like it's the kind of thing aimed primarily at girls - hence, as observed, why it's not being called 'Princess of Mars.'

There are far weirder Mars images than that.
True enough, but hey, Olympus Mons, no?

*I say Harry Potter, but Pirates of the Carribbean may be a better example.

It seems a bit genteel and mannered for what I always imagined at least. That odd track they're playing probably didn't help that impression. They seem to be playing up the romantic angle for the marketing.

There's isn't a lot of exposure for the Martians, I don't know if they're trying to keep suspense or if they're trying to sweep them under the rug but it'll be interesting once they come out of the woodwork.
