"John Carter of Mars" Moving Ahead!

Well it was the best shot of Olympus Mons an incredibly lazy google search could turn up.
Yes, but that image misrepresents the Martian surface, as renders of alien topography often exaggerate the vertical by 10x or more. Here's an image of the volcano sans vertical exaggeration.

Trailer has some good bits (song) and some bits that look very Xena-esque, which to my mind doesn't bode well for a movie.

I loved ERB and probably read A Princess of Mars 10 times as a kid. All of the ERB series start off great and rapidly go down hill.. by the time you get to the fourth in a series it is dreadful pulp

There is so much great stuff in ERB, I'm thrilled at the possibilities (beyond Tarzan, yay!) I sure hope this is strong, whether it's comic book strong, or conan or whatever, just look good and be a rip roaring ride is all I ask. It would be nice if it spawned a whole lot more ERB outings, much as we have had surge of superheroes.

biggest and greatest volcano ever. and I do believe it is still active. so here's hoping they show it in the movie and all so never going to blow in our life times.

I don't know why they don't just call it Princess Of Mars.
Marvel Comics is doing an adaptation of the first novel, and they're calling it, I kid you not, John Carter: A Princess of Mars. :)
:guffaw:

Thanks for the best laff of the day.

I'd have gone for John Carter: Warlord of Mars. That gives you leeway to do John Carter: X of Mars; [character name]: X of Mars or just X of Mars as a franchise format in the future. Nice and flexible. However, the [character name] and X should always refer to the same person. ;)

They may be going with a more photorealistic approach for the same reason some are speculating they're avoiding the original title: The current audience finds artistry "cheesy." Although, as you say, Avatar bucked that trend.

Avatar was photorealisitc. Perhaps the words you're looking for are "fantastic, " "colorful," or "trippy," which some sequences were, and which are not the same thing as avoiding photorealism.
Well, I suppose that's true; I think I've described Michael Whelan as photorealistic, so that's fair. But, yeah, you've got the idea of what I'm saying. More real than imaginative.

Well, they may be referring to John Carter with "princess." It wouldn't be the weirdest reboot ever.

call my princess agin he may run you threw. I really like how thraks look, how much of this will be in 3d?

I suspect the reason Marvel didn't go for "Warlord of Mars" is because Dynamite Entertainment is already doing a John Carter series that adapts the first book called Warlord of Mars. The book's in the public domain; they went with a different title to stay away from trademarks and to keep Disney and the Burroughs estate at bay.

Certainly not... That volcano is not active by any reasonable interpretation of the term. It has not have been active for several million years. And I'm not sure how it could threaten us, even if it was active...

There are a number of active volcanoes in the Solar System outside of Earth, but none on Mars. Io has a bunch, Enceladus has at least one, Europa probably has some smokers under the ice and there is evidence of active volcanoes on Venus.

They could do Jimmy Carter of Mars. He would travel across the surface of Barsoom, building houses.
