JJA says he's sticking to canon, so...

...would it be too much to ask him to tell us what episodes are worth watching just before going to see STXI? Since many of us have TOS on DVD or VHS, wouldn't be more fun and interesting to watch them just before heading out to see the movie? By mentioning a handful of episodes or movies, he wouldn't be giving away too much because The general audience who gets drawn in won't do this obviously, but the die hard fans (that's us!) would get a big kick out of it. It would ensure that we all had the opportunity to pick up on any and all references to TOS.

I'm not sure it would help since this is a prequel. It might help non-fans to get a grasp of the relationships, but as fans who already know the "future", I'm not sure.

Of course, I'm always up for re-watching TOS. This is as good an excuse as any to do it again!

It would help if Abrams decides to key on some past event that was referenced in a TOS episode -- episodes such as Obsession, Court Martial, Journey to Babel, The Menagerie, etc.

Good point, Jackson.

I doubt JJA will give anything away... at least for now. Paramount, Abrams & Company have done a great job of keeping up the suspense so far. Look how many fans are just drooling to find out any little tidbit of information.
I haven't see this amount of pre-release excitement in any movie before.

Hasn't he also said something to the effect he hopes his film will be seen by people with no prior knowledge of the show?

So maybe you should induce amnesia and try to forget everything you ever knew about Star Trek.

Star what?

I agree with him. I'd love for lots of people who have never seen nor cared about Star Trek before to see this film, in addition to existing fans. :vulcan: That would ensure the future of Star Trek.

Great minds think alike...

...either that, or you caught the thread I started yesterday morning.

Exactly!!

Yeah -- but hopefully there will be rewards for those who DO know Star Trek; however I agree that knowing old TOS episodes should not be a prerequisite.

Take The Wrath of Khan for example. Knowing anything about Space Seed was not a requirement for understanding and enjoying that film -- but people who DID know Space Seed may have gotten a little more out of it.

I remember a quote from the Writers that casual viewers will see one kind of movie, while fans more familiar with Star Trek would see a very different kind of movie.

I suspect that subtle references to things we know from "Trek Lore" might color our perception of the events in the movie, while a casual audience would not need to know these details to enjoy the ride.

This will be very interesting to see.

I learned that Khan never forgot a face he never met. :p

Im confused.

If hes sticking to cannon how can Kirk be in this as Ent Captain? if it's just been built? since it's first two captains were April and Pike for nearly 15 years before Kirk took over?

I remember reading at least one book with the character, but when was April mentioned on-screen?

Yes, I appreciate the irony in the comparison with my previous post. :D

^ April was never mentioned in live action Star Trek. He's from an animated Trek episode called "The Counter-Clock Incident".

It's not an issue at all. Where does it say Chris Pine will portray Captain Kirk? The movie is said to be about his academy years. Also, it was hinted at a plot that involves several timeframes. So we could very well see him as the captain of the NCC-1701 after Pike.
