JJ Didn't Just Change Things In The New Timeline/Alternate Universe

Carpe Occasio

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
The Kelvin was supposedly in the original timeline/alternate reality yet it looked nothing like a TOS ship. It would have been better, and more convincing, if the Kelvin, especially the interiors and the uniforms, had been TOS style.

Actually I think the Kelvin interiors and uniforms are pretty fine and good just like they are in the movie...

It may be violating the established visual style of TOS but frankly...I couldn't care less. :)

Re: JJ Didn't Just Change Things In The New Timeline/Alternate Univers

Why? It takes place almost 30 years before TOS. The ship and the uniforms in The Cage (13 years before TOS) and WNMHGB ( 1 to 2 years before TOS?) didn't look the same either.

Re: JJ Didn't Just Change Things In The New Timeline/Alternate Univers

I think the federation are really fashion conscious when it comes to there uniforms so its no great surprise that the Kalvin crew had a different uniform.

Re: JJ Didn't Just Change Things In The New Timeline/Alternate Univers

I think the Kelvin uniforms were meant to be in between the TOS and ENT uniforms. Their design is a lot like the TOS uniforms, but they're all blue like the ENT uniforms.

The Enterprise, inside and out, looked very much the same. Yes, there were minor differences on the bridge, etc., but overall it was the same. I just thought it would have been more realistic, and acceptable to canon-mongers, if the Kelvin had looked more TOS-ish

If the Kelvin had TNG era touch-panels, replicators, and multiphasic torpedoes, I contend that the canon-mongers would still be wrong, as there is no previous canon description of the Kelvin.

What would make it "more TOS-ish" ? Its not like every ship will look exactly like the Enterprise.

More TOS set design style I guess. That minimalist primary colors look. It was just a thought. But did anyone catch what looked like a wet floor when Kirks mom was being hustled to the shuttle? Reminded me of the 'rain' on the Nostromo in Alien.

R U serious. Why would you want a ship design to look like it was made in the 60's. Why do you think the original series looked the way it did. Because that was what they had.

I think the kelvin was a little off without nacelles, but it worked for me.

I understand you're thinking and your desires ;)

but there is NO WAY they are ever going to purposefully make a bridge/ship look the way TOS did. I thought they were going to do that with Ent and then when I saw the commercials I said .....screw you..... I'm not buying that..you want it to be pre-TOS then it better frikkin look pre-TOS...but we have to be realistic...it's just not and never going to happen... :wah:

Re: JJ Didn't Just Change Things In The New Timeline/Alternate Univers

My only problem with the Kelvin was it had a crew of 800, which IMO is too large and inconsistant with Prime Universe, where the TOS Enterprise had a crew of 200-something under Pike in the “Cage” and 430 under Kirk. Maybe a crew of 250-300 at the most, but not 800. And the Kevlin wasn’t even the flagship of the fleet, just a scout/ surveyor. Either the Kelvin was carrying several hundred non-regular crew such as colonists or ferrying Starfleet personal to a starbase, or Abrams Trek was already in an alternate-timeline/universe.

Yeah. THAT would've held up on the big screen.

Re: JJ Didn't Just Change Things In The New Timeline/Alternate Univers

The Kelvin was just fine.

The kelvin did have one Nacelle.

Re: JJ Didn't Just Change Things In The New Timeline/Alternate Univers

The way i like to think of it is this. Remember how Old Spock arrived 25 years later because he fell into the black hole a few seconds after the Narada? Well presumably debris from the destruction caused by the Supernova went through the black hole too.

So i just assumed some rocks went through first, arrived 25 years before Nero and happened to hit Starfleet Chief of R&D Commodore C. Violation on the head, killing him instantly.

His replacement, Captain S. Pandex favoured a different approach to Starship and uniform design than his predecessor.
