JJ Abrams says Rupert Wyatt would be great director for Star Trek 3

Re: JJ Abrams says Rupert Wyatt would be great director for Star Trek

Please this is not the GI JOE guy.

Why cant we get Peter Jackson to direct Trek 3.

Why cant Trek get a high profile critical acclaim director like what star wars is getting now.

I feel like Trek keeps getting Star Wars left overs.

Is this post a joke?

The first thing is easy to Google and see that he's not "the GI Joe guy."

Peter Jackson has not shown any interest in Trek that I'm aware of, and I'm not sure his style even fits the franchise, to be honest (which is not a criticism of either him or Trek).

Trek did get a high profile critically acclaimed director like Star Wars is getting now and a lot of people treated him and his team like crap.

And Trek has not now or in the past gotten Star Wars' "leftovers" in terms of cast or crew, so I don't even know what that is referring to.

Really, just an all around nonsensical post.

Anyway, Wyatt doesn't have much of a catalog of films to judge by, but RotPotA was outstanding, so I would have no problem with him taking over directing duties if it comes to fruition.

You want a taste of a Peter Jackson Star Trek: Take TMP, stretch it out twice as long, make the space walk be the center of the movie, and cap with with a To Be Continued.

I was gonna say, Peter Jackson is boring.

They should have let Bryan Singer do his big budget TNG Finale film.

My Stars that would be amazing, I love his work. Mostly in the superhero genre. But still loved it none the less

When was this going to happen?

Never. Instead, Singer hired Rob Burnett and Mark Altman to develop a tv pitch that would have featured distant descendants of Kirk and Spock set many centuries after TOS.

It never went anywhere.

I do believe that Robert Wise will probably be haunting you for the rest of your life.

;)

Re: JJ Abrams says Rupert Wyatt would be great director for Star Trek

I know he is "retired" and may not be able to want to stand the long hours but I think it should be Leonard Nimoy or Jonathan Frakes. Get a good director from within Trek this time, someone who would at least know something about the canon.

Re: JJ Abrams says Rupert Wyatt would be great director for Star Trek

William Shatner is available.

Shatner's directing career peaked with TFF.;)

If Paramount would keep their hands out of the budget once approved and out of the script then Shatner may be a good choice. Paramount really butchered up TFF leaving Shatner with just a shell of a script and budget from what he wanted in the first place. They are more to blame than Shatner on that movie.

No one is getting hired based on their knowledge of canon.

J.J. watched all the classic episodes and movies, and even read a couple of old novels in preparation for ST'09. What more "canon knowlege" does one need to make a Star Trek film?

Unless he knows all about my fanfic he's not fit to make a Trek film!

My fanfic in Canon!!!!!!!!

That assumes Abrams doesn't know anything, and I believe he did his research.

At any rate I don't think it's necessary that a director know that much about canon. Maybe with even less knowledge, he'll bring a fresh perspective to the franchise, like Abrams did with Trek.

I'm not sure how much better The Final Frontier might have been without Paramount's interference. Improved, definitely, but the core story itself wasn't the strongest Trek could have.

Re: JJ Abrams says Rupert Wyatt would be great director for Star Trek

If I remember correctly, Harve Bennett and Nicholas Meyer had NO knowledge or history with Star Trek before they made WOK, the BEST Star Trek movie ever. But they did their research, just like JJ did. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was really good, MUCH better than I expected it to be. I'd love to see Wyatt direct a Star Trek film, or a Star Wars film for that matter.

Leonard Nimoy would be good, not cause of canon, but cause I think he did a great job with STIII and IV. AS for Frakes, I'm not so sure; he's not bad, there's just something about his style that I find lacking.

Re: JJ Abrams says Rupert Wyatt would be great director for Star Trek

To be fair to Jonny Frakes, I suspect Berman's heavy hand on TNG's movies. After all, he was charged with 'protecting Gene's vision'.

If I recall correctly, Berman opposed the Dominion War in Deep Space Nine and wanted it over really quickly. He said it went against "Gene's vision".

Re: JJ Abrams says Rupert Wyatt would be great director for Star Trek

"Gene's vision" also lead to a major problem with Insurrection as well.
