JJ Abrams considering Khan in next movie?

I think that JJ should use a bit of creativeness and try to think of something new. If they go down that path, they're just going to re-write everything in this new, brat universe.

If they were going to do a Wrath, wouldn't they need to do a Space Seed first? I mean, why the hell is Khan going to be pissed at Kirk when Khan is still frozen?
BINGO.

Unless said "Khan" reboot were about finding the Botany Bay all over again and combining elements of the TOS episode and the second film all in one new picture.
That's kind of what I figure they'd do if they did decide to make a new Khan movie. The various suggestions made by others here about a random Federation ship finding the Botany Bay, which Khan and co. then take over and start causing super-big trouble that only the Enterprise can stop, is probably close to the route they'd take.

Khan can take over a planet killer "Doomsday Machine" and destroy all the Fed. planets and keep Earth for his own eden.....;)

Joking aside. I hope there will be a trilogy only. But maybe no Khan...:shifty:

This is why forty years of backstory had to be thrown out the window? So we could remake what pretty much everyone already agrees was a pretty good movie?

Well, that's more than most of the movies and a good part of the TV Franchise were able to accomplish utilizing "forty years of backstory"...so, yeah. :techman:

What on earth are you talking about? Out of ten movies pre-Abrams, TMP, TWoK, TSFS, TVH, TUC and FC were pretty much uniformly considered to be excellent Trek films, and TNG and DS9 were both strong series that simultaneously played off the past and introduced new elements. And that's not even counting the excellent 'Relaunch' book series now running, which show that modern tv Trek was held back not because of canon, but because of lazy writers.

And seriously, is this the best people can come up with for this brave new universe, this place in which anything is possible and the writers no longer have to respect what's been done already? To dig into the popular elements of the franchise and just mine them for ideas, rather than coming up with something new?

Yes. 200 million in a week and critical acclaim is probably the best they can come up with.

I wasn't talking about this film, thank you. I was talking about the idea that this thread is dedicated to, namely that the next film should simply grab Khan and stick him in a movie, rather than doing something new and different, which after all is supposed to be the very reason for this reboot.

Kahn makes the whole thing gimmicky... all of a sudden Star Trek feels more like "Batman Begins" with repackaged villians expected with each new run...

I want to see the FALLOUT of the loss of Vulcan and an early Federation/Klingon war-- not necessarily involving some kind of key villain.

So, as we're dredging up old characters, if they wanted to go in a lighter vein, would we be cool with them using Cyrano Jones or Harry Mudd? :)

If they wanted to use any old character, I'd pay money for them to use Kor, Kang, or Koloth. The Klingons. A younger version of one of them. Kirk on his way to becoming the legendary rival and arch-villain of the Klingons. And the Klingon is a captain to match Kirk. Really test him. C'mon. Seriously. It's the natural direction in which to go.

Insert Kirk's, "Again with the Klingons," line from The Simpsons version of Star Trek XII here. But I'm dead serious.

First off, to everyone in this thread, once again... it's Khan, not Kahn. :)

Okay, now that we've got that important matter cleared up...

I think there are two separate issues here. Could Abrams & Co. make a good Khan movie? Yes, I think they could. Should they? No, I don't think they should.

Why? Because they've gone to great lengths to wipe the slate clean, start a new approach to Star Trek, and bring the mainstream audience back in. They need to run with that for a while. Don't immediately start remaking old Trek stories or, no matter how well done it is, you're gonna get saddled with the idea that your films are nothing more than retreads.

Which would be so super-lazy even single celled organisms at the bottom of the Marianas Trench could write it...but it's probably what they want to do.
