JJ Abrams confirms ST4 and not recasting Chekov

I thought sending Jaylah off to the academy was a mistake. I would have much rather they had just enlist instead.

I just think Petty Officer Jaylah sounds more fun and interesting, especially if she butts heads with Kirk.

All pilot are officers, the lowest rank being Ensign.

All astronauts are officers too.

By extension, all starship crews are astronauts and are thus, officers of whatever rank.

Certainly for star bases, planet side facilities etc, we have enlisted personnel.

Security guards, technicians, yeomen, and specialists have all been shown to be enlisted personnel. I assumed Keenser was enlisted because Scotty treats him like a dogsbody and he never gives orders but the IDW comic stated him to be a lieutenant - i.e. quite a senior officer! Bonkers.

Jaylah would work well as a security guard IMO. She doesn't need to be an officer. However, Starfleet Academy may also offer a basic training course in Federation law, technology, history sociology, and stellar cartography in addition to the specialism the enlisted crewman wants to study. Graduates would be officers but I don't see why we have to assume that enlisted personnel would not be able to study at the same establishment for a time.

Turning Jaylah into a mindless brute security guard would be a total waste of her potential.

She showed plenty of aptitude at fixing and maintaining Starfleet equipment that it would be a travesty for her to not be in the Engineering division.
