Jerry Reed dies at 71

Jerry Reed, besides the "Smokey" movies, was in one of my all time favorites "Hot Stuff," with Dom DeLouise, Suzanne Pleshette, and Ossie Davis. Very funny movie, and Jerry is great in it.

R.I.P., sir. :(

I remember that movie.

"You know what burns my ass?"
'What."
"Flame about that high."

Just saw Jerry Reed in "Gator",another Burt Reynolds movie from the 70's.
Jerry played an affable but ultimately very bad bad guy.
Sad news.
That might have been his best acting role. He was more than a little scary in that one.

Sadly I had just a couple of days ago been made aware through youtube what a great musician he was and then this. Does anyone know of any good albums that don't focus on his novelty hits?

Georgia on My Mind (for example)

I think most of his albums were a mix. You might get one or two songs which were more humorous or jokey, a couple of nice ballad songs, a couple of shut-up-and-play numbers, a reworking of a classic by someone else and crossovers whenever he felt like it -- he got around, stylistically, and could play all of it well.

A lot of the early ones were good, in my experience:

  • Alabama Wild Man (1968)
  • Georgia Sunshine (1970)
  • Cookin' (1970)
  • When You're Hot, You're Hot (1971)
  • Ko-ko Joe (1971)
  • Jerry Reed (1972)
  • Hot a' Mighty! (1973)
  • Lord, Mr. Ford (1973)
  • The Uptown Poker Club (1973)
Several people have named later material upthread. Just pick one and dive in; you'll find something worth listening to. Listening to other artists' takes on his songs can be worthwhile, too.

Wow...I was just thinking about Smokey and the Bandit the other day. It's obviously dated now, but it sure was a fun movie...and that song really does stick with you.

RIP.
