Jennifer Lien

DS9

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I am confused. Was she kicked off the show or did she quit?
Also, if she had stayed on how do you think her character would have changed if at all and how would the show itself have been different is she had stayed on all 7 years?

She was kicked off because they felt her character was going no where plus they needed to get ratings up and introducing someone new and sexy was the way to go.

Had she stayed . . . I've never really thought of that.

She would have died before Voyager got home due to her short lifespan.

Ocampans live at most (normally) to nine years of age. Kes could have lasted the full seven years, since she was only between one and two when the show started. She would have been between eight and nine by the time of Endgame (an old woman :p).

Besides, Tanis managed to live into his mid-teens and was still youngful, so I'm sure they could have found a way for Kes to do it as well.

Anyways, she was kicked off the show because they didn't want to give Garrett Wang the boot after he was named one of People Magazine's Most Beautiful People.

If she had stayed, the show probably wouldn't have been much different. The focus still would have been on Janeway, Seven and The Doctor. Kes would probably have been a second tier character, like Torres or Paris.

To be honest, she was the only reason I watched the show. She was cute as hell. :)

I really liked Kes. I don't think the show would have been much different. I think they could have did the whole change of focus to Seven even if Kes was still there.

They needed her wages to pay for Jeri Ryan.

Kes had her second Birthday party during the episode Twisted.

Twisted was strangely placed since although it is the 6th episode of season 2, the production code says that Twisted was intended to be the 19th episode of season one.

So she was supposed to be 2 years old in season one to hasten her expiration on Earth's doorstep come the fulfilment of season seven.

I really liked Kes. Her and the Doctor were my favorite characters on the show. Not only was she cute as a button, but I felt that her characters personality fit in the Star Trek universe really well. I think that trading the cute woman for a typical sexy blonde was a severe lapse in judgment. I'd take cute over sexy any day.

She was pretty enough and had an interesting character but she walked like a hod carrier. It was incongruous seeing her galumphing around in her peculiar clothes.

Besides, Tanis managed to live into his mid-teens and was still youngful, so I'm sure they could have found a way for Kes to do it as well.

youthful?

Kes could have been an awesome character if they'd given her a bit of an edge. "Warlord" more than shows Lien would've been up to it.

Unfortunately, the Kes we got was amazingly bland. Meek, even.

...and that scream!:eek::ack:

Seven of Nine had an edge. Yeah, she wore the tight suit and had an insane rack, but her combination of a dominant personality and being severely fucked up made for a super character.

What episode is the "scream" from King Daniel?

Anyway, I think that Seven of Nine is good character, however, one can see how much her character changed the show, it is almost as if the show revolves around her. I am not saying that this is really a bad thing, I argue that they could have probably used her a little less.

That scream was freaky, but not a deal-breaker for me. The episode Elogium is what kind of got on my nerves. Like others said, Kes wasn't a bad character, just a victim of less than creative writing. I've also heard they had to release Jenifer Lien from her contract to pay for Jeri Ryan, too, and overall, they probably were better off doing that. I think it would have been nice to see Kes as a reoccurring character like they did with Seska, besides Fury, though.

Jennifer Lien was fired, not because "the writers couldn't write for the character" (now that's a pathetic excuse from those in charge considering some great Kes episodes in season 3) but because those in charge wanted to "sex up" the show by bringing in a character like Seven Of Nine.

Since they couldn't afford ten main characters for some reason, one had to go. The first choice was obviously Kim but when a silly inside poll among the staff of a certain magazine showed him as one of "the 50 most handsome", those in charge of Voyager changed their minds and dumped Kes instead.

Or they would have magicked up a way for her to live longer, a la "Before and After."

Yes, they could, should and probably would have done that.

Kes' most horrible screaming was in "Cold Fire". The most awful, fingernails-on-chalkboard sound imaginable.

You haven't seen many of the later horror movies, have you? ;)

And yes, the show would have been better with Kes. The show lost a lot when she was "deleted".

Yeah, IMHO, they could have done a Kes episode once a season, at least. Done a Daniel Jackson with her character or something. I am easy to please, and there are few Voyager episodes I don't like, and Fury is one of them. That was not the best way to bring Kes back. Sort of ruined her character: even if she was senile, going back in time with the intent of destroying voyager made no sense. If they were going to do a time travel thing with Kes, it should have been during the year of hell and\or shattered, and\or endgame, even if it were just a cameo.

I disagree.
They couldn't write for her judging by how her personality flip flopped.
One minute she's a year old girl from a closed society that knows nothing of the "world", the next she giving out advice and has wisdom of someone that's experance life. She's never seen a starship ever, yet she acted like Voyager was nothing new too her. They didn't know how to write for her because they thenselves could gauge how they wanted her to act. Was she a child or an adult? If they couldn't figure it out, they couldn't successfully show her growing up. It clearly shows they messed up on her execution.

I like Seven of Nine, but I feel she got waaaaaaay too much airtime. Their motivation for boosting ratings was really transparent. Blonde with big tits = more nerds getting boners.
