Jennifer Lien...Warlord

Did they know what to do with anyone? Harry Kim's big stand out shows ("Non Sequitor", "Favorite Son", "Emanations") were way, way worse than anything that featured Kes, and he was infinitely blander. I like Tom Paris as much or more than I do Kes, but he was just as wasted in the first few seasons (not that it got much better later on, outside of "Thirty Days" and a handful of others), and outside of being "the pilot" had less of a character. Was he ever believable as "the bad boy" of the crew? Every time Chakotay got the spotlight, I wondered how long it would be before Native American groups started protesting the show.

The Doctor was working. So was Janeway, for the most part. Most of the others were hit or miss in a big way. I don't see how Kes could be singled out as the worst of the bunch. Not even close.

Pretty much why it became "The Janeway-7of9-Dr. Show" starting in the 4th season.

They all got paid the same no matter how little or much they had to do as long as they were there.

Creatively though it had to hurt their vanity that their T-Shirts and action figures sold poorly.

I wonder if its kind of an out-of-body experience to see yourself as an action figure. Surreal.

eBay!

Actually, I have a poster, a cut-away view of both Voyager and the Delta Flyer with Borg cubes firing at them from behind. My mother bought it for me when I was 11, I think for my birthday. 15 years later, it's still on my bedroom wall. But that's the only merchandise I have.

I have enough boxy man fandom shirts to last me rather a long time though. I'm wearing one with the original Enterprise on it right now. It's pretty great but would be pretty more great if it actually was female flattering shaped.

Here it is. It looks better IRL becaues the space colours are all blue and green.

This is LIVE ACTION POSTING folks.

Actually they are edible, I just found out, but it's not possible to eat them in bulk the way you would, say, spinach. Because they are onions.

I'm waiting to get the most out of the lawn guy like stretching a haircut out another 3 weeks.

I'd laugh if the fact that all grass is edible was suppressed by the evil lawnmowing industrial complex.

How come Worf got an episode about how sad he was every time one of his wives died, but Neelix got nada?

Well, they did get a post-breakup reconcilement scene in Fair Trade where they apparently came to terms. But, it just didn't make the final cut. :(

I think they got too obsessed with the delicate Mayfly concept when they were designing Kes. She was referred to as the Mayfly in early notes due to the short lifespan, but she should have been a scrapper from the beginning. She was determined enough to leave the Ocampa city on her own, but couldn't fight the Kazon. Her injuries when we first see her suggest she either tried to resist, or refused their demands and was beaten. She could have been presented as tough and resourceful from the beginning, and perhaps deliberately enticed Neelix to rescue her.

Instead, they did everything but put a princess dress and angel wings on her.

I know it's an opinion that appears to be only slightly held, but I think the sweet, dainty, delicate image and persona usually ascribed to Kes is simply inaccurate, even in a surface perception kind of sense. From the beginning she displayed an unwavering strength of conviction and purpose. Her determination was nigh to indomitable even if expressed quietly and without dramatic animation.

Her fixedness on a goal was unerring even if she might not have known how it was going to be ultimately reached. Even when she was out of her depth in technical knowledge of the specifics of a situation, she was able to make compelling arguments that influenced others, as on the Doctor's behalf in Eye of the Needle and the Swarm. To say nothing of the job she did on Tuvix in Resolutions. She displayed fearlessness and focus in what to me is an intriguing passage when she is reasoning with the Doc as Hyde, in Darkling.

No, I think she was extremely tough and resourceful as things were. It just seems that the combination of Jennifer Lien's appearance, presence, and mien, amongst other factors, made it easy for people to fail to see it.

It's edible. It just doesn't taste all that great.

I thought you could eat it but don't really digest it? It's not like anyone has come up with juicing it either.

Onion grass, though edible, has a kind of pongy element to it that you don't get in shallots etc.. But it's nice to know that if I ever was stranded on a desert island with no other onion or garlic sources I could use it.

As to Kes and the whole tougher than she looks thing.. sure. Technically this is true. But for some reason it just didn't turn her into an awesome character.

It put her in the upper echelon on Voyager. With better writing, great things were possible. I can't say the same for the likes of Kim, Chakotay, Neelix... but I'm starting to sound like a broken record there.

Hurray for the Doctor/Robert Picardo! He shines all the brighter for all the dullness around him.

Totally fair enough. :techman:

Tom Paris, the Doctor, Kes and Janeway are my favorite Voyager characters. I don't know precisely what that says about me, but I'm throwing it out there.

My favorites are Janeway, 7 of 9 and the EMH. But the only one I actually dislike is Kes and repeat viewings have raised her from 2nd least favorite Trek character to "meh" which is quite a rise in esteem.

I'm neutral on Tuvok and Torres. Neither has ever made much of an impression on me, though in both cases I chalk that more up to the writing than the acting. Neelix and Seven I have found alternately endearing and enraging. I don't think I've liked Harry Kim or Chakotay, though both have had good or half-decent episodes built around ("Timeless" and "Ashes to Ashes" aren't bad for the former, "Initiations" and... "Timeless" again, I guess, for the latter).
