Jennifer Lien status

OK, I may be wrong. What you are writing could be 100% truth.

If so it is truth of very little value. Jennifer Lien finished high school around 25 years ago. It's not adding to the picture of what happened to her to post she was a popular teenager using substances other teenagers used and probably with a fat head about her pretty popularity so came across as mean to the more dork students. This describes a section of every single high school and where that person ends up in 25 years has little if anything to do with this picture.

Not to mention that it contradicts what most other people have written about her.

People have written about her working life, not her high school life. Lots of people peak socially in high school
That's absolutely true! :techman:

But I've also seen comments about Jennifer as a teenager which describs her as shy, nice and polite. So there are some contradictions here.

My point is it doesn't matter. It has no relevance. The high school story told by Notribble is neither here nor there, it points no more to where she ended up than your preferred story about her being nice and shy. Neither descriptors mean a thing nor are they in any way so extreme or remarkable that we can say they point towards what came next 25 years on.

Here's the thing....those comments about het being nice that you heard could be true or false, you don't know. You would just rather believe the nice comments because you like her. Neither version of events has more proof than the other.

People can be both things, to different people. I seriously doubt Jennifer Lien is as badly written as Kes was.

Though apparently both their lives climaxed in a self destructive Fury.. VOY foreshadowing?

Yes, but the point is that I have found a lot more comments about her being nice, shy and friendly than I've seen about her being a mean bastard.

In fact, I've only seen one poster comment about her being mean and evil and that's Notribble in the posts above, well that's if I don't count those double posters on the startrek.com forum a couple of years ago who obviously were throwing dirt at the acterss (and the character as well) just to p*** me off.

If a celebrity is mean and nasty or has been that in the past, then both facts and rumors about it are spread very quickly. I mean, a lot of people did know that Shannen Doherty was a pain in the a** for everyone involved with that Beverly Hills series before she was kicked out. The same can be said about Charlie Sheen. William Shatner had a reputation about being a not so nice guy either when TOS was still on air.

During all those years I've found more positive things about Jennifer than negative things, except for the recent events in Tennessee and that she's not that good entertainer at conventions. So is it so strange then that I regard the positive reports as more valuable than one negative?

I don't think that Kes was badly written. She was an excellent character.

And if she had been, then the writers were to blame. Then they should have been fired, not Jennifer Lien.

I don't want to come up with more conspiracy theories than we already have, it's bad enough as it is. But sometimes I do have a feeling rhat Jennifer's downward spiral started when she was kicked out from Voyager.

So what if he did. It could very well be the truth. You have no idea what she was like in high school. You have an idea of what you WANT her to be like and you are unwilling to accept anything that might contradict that even if it is backed up.

That really is the bottom line. The way that "Notribble" has been rounded on makes me uncomfortable. If the anecdote is true it nonetheless remains a small window into her life at one fixed moment. Speaking for myself personally there was a time in school that I was a bullied child, and there was a time when I became the bully. But it never rid me of my inherent shyness, even to today, decades later. For all we know the rumoured drug taking was a reaction to that. Many things can be a reaction to that. An attempt to deal with it, and that too may continue up to today. I met Lien when she was 21 and she was the painfully shy person that many describe, so it is possible she had underlying mental health issues even then and found fame and attention very difficult to deal with. But I don't get the attitude from certain people above that Notribble must be ridiculed and accused of lying, with ridiculous fake poster conspiracies and God knows what else because his/her anecdote isn't the rosy, perfect impression of Lien that it seems some have and can't stand to move away from. In reality it is more than likely that Lien, like most of us, isn't perfect and has personality flaws that will not accord with some people. That's just the way life is.

Notribble didn't say she was "evil" that I can see. I've read throw his/her posts in this thread, of which there are a grand total of three. All there is is a suggestion that in school she was a bit full or herself and of a personality that was disliked by Notribble. Much of this is, of course, told from NoTribble's perspective and may be exaggerated by the mind's eye.

I think the problem you have is that you are playing the straw man card somewhat and pretending that Notribble's position is "Lien is a nasty arsehole". Well, that's not really what I read. What I read was "when I was in high school I briefly knew her and didn't like how she behaved". That's not a reflection on whoever Lien is now or became in her twenties and beyond. So I think the comparisons to Shatner or Sheen are off point and you've blown this way out of proportion, not least by advancing the bizarre idea that Lien could only every be all sweetness and nice throughout her life or Hitler incarnate from day one.

What you choose as "more valuable" is not based in reality. Only your personal experiences with her are. Every celebrity has an off day. Go to any site talking about celebrity experiences and you'll find negative stories even for some of the most loved and rumoured-to-be-nice celebrities. Hell, I once had an off day with Leonard Nimoy, but it doesn't mean I chose to only believe negative stories about him from that day on. An anecdote not backed up by proof is just that, and the stories of sweetness and roses that you choose to give more value to are, in reality, of no greater value simply because they are greater in number - not least because most of them will come from very limited fan encounters and not meeting Lien in a non-fan context.

I would wager that nobody is the same person as an adult as they were in high school. We all grow and learn and change. Sometimes the change is for the better, sometimes it's for the worse.

It just seems there are some fans that have difficulty accepting anything other than a rosy portrayal of Lien because that's how they personally want her to be. Even so far as to say that a direct quote from Lien that contradicts their own personal belief of behind-the-scenes happenings is a lie.
