Jennifer Lien in trouble again?

I have always been a Kes fan and was upset when she left the show, it was a shame to read a couple of years ago that she was in legal trouble.

Just came across this today, and it seems she has unfortunately been arrested again last month.

Tried googling for more information, but can't find anything more. I'm not sure how much information is in the public domain in the US. Does this just mean she has been fined or could potentially go to prison?

That sucks. Being unceremoniously dumped from Voyager when she wasn't even going to be dumped in the first place really screwed up her future.

I think it's sad that people feel the need to constantly bring this up. Due to her job Jennifer Lien might have been standing in the limelight of public interest once, but that was 20 (!) years ago. Whatever she's doing now is just her personal business. People should respect that and just leave her be, especially if they're purporting to be a fan.

It probably didn't help, but she still had acting roles in American History X and the animated Men in Black series after leaving Star Trek. I couldn't even begin to speculate on why her life has taken the turns it has, but to blame it purely on getting axed in favour of Seven/Jeri Ryan is over-simplifying things.

I never saw the animated Men in Black series, I'll have to track it down and check it out.

It's tough to draw the line where concern becomes gossip.

As a fan of Kes, and therefore Ms. Lien herself, there's a desire to keep informed of her status... but then we have to be conscious that our concern for her wellbeing doesn't appear to seem like "just another celebrity scandal" and invade her privacy.

It's a delicate balancing act.

You have a point. It's akin to airing someone's "dirty laundry" without their consent.

Then again, I'm sure there will be some people who would claim the misdemeanor-er waived their right to privacy by committing the offence in the first place.

Depending on the circumstances, such as inebriation, the 2nd viewpoint could be considered a form of "victim blaming" if the person in question wasn't in full control of their best judgement at the time the offence took place.

The problem is that she is a celebrity.

OK, maybe she's not so well-known as many other celebrities but still so much known that the problems which did show up in September 2015 were published in several newspapers, news programs and on different websites in many different countries and even on forums where they actually didn't belong.

Even if such things weren't aloowed to be discussed on the Trek BBS, they would be debated and discussed on many other forums. Considering the downright disgusting comments I saw on some other forums, this forum is at least civilized which means that if issues like these are debated, it will at least be in a civilized manner.

Most of us are also showing deep concern in this case.

I'm wondering about this too. In my country, it would be considered a matter of privacy to protect the identity of offenders in many such cases, and there are rules in place to secure that. I can only speculate that in the U.S. this would have to do with that the role of the government is probably seen in a more minimalistic and less "protective" way, and that freedom and availability of information is regarded higher than privacy issues. Then again, I might easily be wrong.

Are you disagreeing with me saying it's not going too far, or disagreeing that it's a public record? If the former, that's fine, it's your opinion. But it is a public record no matter what you and I believe.

It's a common law right to inspect court records and other governmental records in the U.S. It's meant as a safeguard to protect the integrity of the courts/other governmental agencies. That's at least the basis for the right. But there are certain privacy exceptions to public disclosure which require redaction or are altogether not available.
