Yeah, it's just like everything else in this movie ... it doesn't have to make any sense, it just has to look cool and fresh and funky ...

You mean, just like anything else in the franchise from the Planetkiller to V'Ger that made it to the screen first and foremost because it was visually appealing and in the context of its time was "cool".

Don't kid yourself, cause it "looks cool" has always been the first and foremost reason any F/X or spaceship made it to the screen. That's okay because its all made up anyway.

And actually the film made pretty clear sense.

I don't mind the name Jellyfish as a casual name. I don't think it was the ship's class or anything. They should have named it the Seleya after the Vulcan ship from ENT. It's still clearly a Federation ship, but there have been Starfleet ships with Vulcan names.

Seleya would have been perfect, especially since it's where classic Spock was reborn.

I don't mind the shape. The name Jellyfish is what irks me. What, they couldn't invent a Vulcan word for "Jellyfish" to use, or even come up with a better Vulcan name? Why not the Lirpa? It looks like one.

Well, it wasn't called the Jellyfish. It had no name at all. "Jellyfish" came from Geordi, who claimed he built the ship when he most obviously didn't.

See, what really happened was that Geordi became depressed after four movies in which his character became as useless as a redshirt on an away mission, so he made up the whole story about designing new ships just to sound important. To lend credence to his fantasy, he enlisted the help of Picard, Worf, and the electronic retard B4. Picard pretended he was an ambassador, Worf pretened he was a general, and B4 pretended he was Data in command of the Enterprise. Geordi tried to get Riker and Troi to help, since he knew of Trio's penchant for wanting to be in other Trek series' that had nothing to do with them, but alas, Braga beat Geordi to them.

The Jellyfish is of Vulcan design, isn't it?

I haven't seen the movie in a while, but the "Jellyfish" had a very Starfleet aesthetic, if not design. You can always tell it's a Starfleet ship. Maybe Starfleet is a misnomer here. Federation ship. It's not established whether it's Starfleet, but it's definitely Federation. I'm sure there was some implication in the film that the ship was Vulcan. Of course by definition a Vulcan ship would have to be a Federation ship, no? Regardless, the design lineage of the Seleya seems obvious to me. (yes I'm calling Spock's ship the Seleya. If we use it enough times it'll become canon )

We should make a poll whether we should name Spock's ship the Seleya

Well, one might argue that the Starfleet aesthetic was heavily influenced by the Vulcan aesthetic once the Federation formed anyway, so it's still very ambiguous.

And I'm all for the poll, but myself, I shall keep calling her the Seleya, poll or no.

That is a beautiful picture. I just saw the movie again tonight and with this thread in mind, noticed that it actually does look like a jellyfish.

I'm sure there was some implication in the film that the ship was Vulcan.

The red-matter part is Vulcan science. The design of the ship with the sphere in the middle is to accommodate some aspect of the red matter. Don't remember where I heard that; might be the book.

STO which has used Countdown for it's backstory called it a joint venture between the VSA and the Daystrom Institute which Geordi worked for.
