It's not as though this is some newly discovered thing. Perspective doesn't get fixed when shown on an older TV.

assuming they only had the 1 in TNG, then completely redressing the set like you propose would have been a lot of extra work for very little gain!

Like I said, done for convenience. But I disagree with the level of work vs gain. The angles on Picard and Darren are filmed separately anyway. They could have turned around on the set (filming each side facing the same direction in reality) and no one could tell the difference.

I'm sure it wasn't a matter of convenience. Shows have a budget and each scene is budgeted. Then you factor in time and money with Union prop and electrical people, etc., having a real Jeffries Tube for some brief shots was like asking for a unicorn that farts delicious no-longer-made Keebler Cinnamon Crispanas.

Also -- since I don't have episode available to me -- how did she get Picard's deeply personal woodwinds instrument he keeps in a wooden box in his quarters?

Weren't they on a date and met somewhere else first and then decided to go there? Thus Picard carried the flute and box with him.

Also, on an earlier date, he already showed her his flute and she blew on it, too.

That being said, once you start to notice when they used those matte set extensions they tend to stick out a bit more. It 's easier to spot on TVs now a days, but 20 years ago my TV sucked and it was much more of a game to look for them and eventually find them.

I rewatched the episode today, as well as Wesley's escape scene in The Game which features some great JT footage. Now I know far more about that set than I expected!

Okay I found the episode and re-watched it.

I noticed the piano suddenly had legs!
I think that's because there was no way to have the actress not look stupid trying to sit hunched over playing the keyboard at floor level.

You get a good look at the legs when we get a closeup of the pianist's hands; those are some substantial leg pylons! However, there are a couple of clicking sounds just after she unrolls the piano (and the camera cuts to Picard) so I think the intention (even if it was added in post) was that she brought the legs with her in that shoulder bag, along with Picard's flute.

And if you look again, you'll notice another little thing when the camera pans away from Picard and Nella playing -- a thick power chord leading away from the keyboard on the left side on the screen.

I don't think it's a power cord; just the straps of her bag, cast upon the floor.

It's now my opinion that TNG only had one full length of horizontal tube (around 12 feet long) along with a short section (around 4 feet) used occasionally for sequences where the hatch had open to reveal more tube:

There were also 2 different "junction room" sets.

• The main one (situated just off Main Engineering) is octagonal in shape and has an identical room both above and below the main level. The ladder (and floor/ceiling hatches) are against the rear wall, up a single step, and the hatches are square.
  
  
  
  The three levels are great for sequences where characters are climbing. This pic is shot from the ceiling of the upper level and really takes advantage of the set design:
  
  
  
  
  
• The second junction room is what was used in The Game and Lessons. It is the same octagonal shape as the other, but the octagonal hatches are in the centre of the room (this allows room for an extra wall hatch). The floor has an hatch design built into it, but it is flat with the floor and I doubt it could ever be opened.
  
  
  The ceiling hatch is octagonal and centred with the one one the floor (and seems to feature functional doors!) A freestanding ladder is present, but there is no identical junction room above this set:
  
  
  Finally (and probably because the hatch doesn't function), the set dressers in Lessons did not get the orientation of the ladder with the hatch correct! (Notice in the above pics that the dividing line on the hatch is parallel to the ladder instead of perpendicular)

In regards to the fire cave, well, I don't have a Vreenak meme, but if I did have one, I'd put it here.

And nah, Sisko and Tebok/Macet/Dukat/Frederick La Rouque didn't fall into the giant fire cave. It was falling with style.

Although they may have actually torched Nurse Ratchet. It's been a while since I've seen that one.
