I enjoyed Bewitched for the secondary characters as well.
Jeannie always felt kind of claustrophobic to me and Nelson was such a stick in the mind.
I did like Jeannie on Scooby Doo better than Samantha on The Flintstones though.

I enjoyed Bewitched for the secondary characters as well.
Jeannie always felt kind of claustrophobic to me and Nelson was such a stick in the mind.
I did like Jeannie on Scooby Doo better than Samantha on The Flintstones though.
That was the theme of Jeannie as well. Remember, Tony had no real control of her, despite her calling him "Master," which was done out of love; he freed her in the first episode. Tony represented the "uptight" Establishment and Jeannie represented the "innocent" Hippie Counterculture. It was the quintessential 60s show.
Jeannie was the better show. IDOJ had a crazy sort of energy that Bewitched couldn't come close to.
IDOJ had the whole space program thing going too, which I really liked. Astronaut > Boring ad exec.
I liked Bewitched too, but the show took a major hit when Dick York left and it never recovered.
I also think that Jeannie had WAY better special effects. Check out the episodes where Jeannie has shrunken herself and is hiding in a drawer, or other places...they actually bothered to build nice looking oversized props around her. Bewitched never had that level of attention to detail.
Also while both women were beautiful, Jeannie was just plain hotter.
I will say that Bewitched had one really amazing asset that IDOJ didn't....Mr. Paul Lynde!

does anyone remember that I Dream of Jeannie tv movie from the 80's? I dont remember anything about it other than that I hated the ending.

And Paul even ended up on Jeannie I think, at least one time. But I agree with all the reasons you stated above. I think Dick York leaving that show was something it never recovered from. Seargent just didn't have a connection to "Sam" that I felt with Dick York. I'm not sure what it was, but there was no 'it' with them....some people just dont click

Endora, Maurice, Uncle Arthur, Cousin Serena, Gladys Kravitz, Doctor Bombay, Larry Tate, Aunt Clara, Esmerelda . . . Oh MY but Bewitched was a much fuller show. As I recall, Jeannie's Evil Twin Sister never even had a name. She was just "Jeannie's Evil Sister" . . .

But how many of them were actually interesting? To me, just Larry, Endora, Doctor Bombay and Uncle Arthur. And to be fair they were all great in their supporting roles.
I'll still take Major Healy and Dr. Bellows over all of them though!

Aunt Clara was classic, and Mrs. Kravitz, what neighbor hood doesn't have one? Maurice, Uncle Authur, Esmerelda, Larry Tate, Dr. Bombay (who even appeared in Passions) and Endora, as a mother-in-law who can turn "Derwood" into anything.
Sam was a witch, and even though I'm gay, I could see that Sam was hotter in her black Witch dress than Jeannie in her outfit.
At first she had to hide, mostly from Dr. Bellows and Major Nelsons mother (I seem to remember mother Nelson coming by once); then once she married Tony, she had to continue hiding her identity as a genie, and pass as a human. So Sam chose to pass as human, while Jeanie had to, at least at first while under orders from Tony.
I got into IDOJ more than I did Bewitched, never quite had the same feeling toward Bewitched as I did toward IDOJ, even though IDOJ was pretty silly, but in the context of other sixties comedies, it was great. I mean I grew up on a steady diet of the old Nick at Nite- Dobie Gillies, My Three Sons, My Favorite Martian, Mr. Ed, IDOJ, Batman, the Monkees, Donna Reed, Lassie, Get Smart and others, and for some reason I remember watching a lot more IDOJ. Partially because Jeannie was hot, partially because it was pure comedy. It didn't take itself seriously and I enjoyed it to the hilt. I remember getting super excited when the old Monkees series came back on Nick at Night in the 90s and taping them during a marathon they did, waking up early at 6am to start taping them. Dunno whatever happened to that tape...
Anyway... I still consider IDOJ as much a part of my childhood as some of those who grew up with it first run. And as a kid... you think EVERYTHING is first run. I kept hoping that they'd come back and do more episodes LOL

Great post, and I totally agree. I found Bewitched to be, I don't know how I would term it, but it seemed stuffy. Where as IDOJ was just lunacy, especially when Tony and Roger were up to their necks with Bellows...
