JD's Comic Book Thread

I've been using Samsung Galaxy Tab tablets for the last several years and I've been very happy with them, they are all around tablets though. I think most of the devices that are exclusively e-readers are usually black and white e-ink screens, so they wouldn't be idea for full color comics.

Makes sense, they're Fox properties now owned by Disney, I'd keep them in-house as well.

Love those Finch covers, his style is perfect for this. (He's local, so I'm always biased towards his work)

I'm not the biggest fan of Finch's work, but even I have to admit, his covers for these two are awesome.

Burned out and bailed on my epic Marvel catch up just short of the line.

In search of a different experience started a Superman/Action Comics readthrough using Rebirth as a jumping on point.

Any fans out there ?

Dark Horse has lost the comics license for Predator and Alien to Marvel.
I noticed there is no mention of Prometheus, I wonder if that means it's staying at Dark Horse, or if it's a part of the same license as the other two? So I think that leaves Terminator as the last big TV/movie license that Dark Horse has left.
They lost Star Wars, Alien, and Predator to Marvel, and they lost Buffy and Angel to Boom!.
Well, of old franchises, yes, though Terminator has never been as big in comics, either. They still have a couple of newer ones, of which the biggest one currently seems to be Stranger Things. At least, there seems to be at least one new issue of a Stranger Things book out per month. They also still have The Orville, and at least before the lockdown, they had announced a new Witcher mini series.

Still, they've been getting clobbered in the last few years, especially by Marvel. First Star Wars, then Conan, now this. Makes you think they might get those Disney/Pixar merch licences so that Disney wouldn't feel too bad for Dark Horse. Nah, Disney has no sympathy.

Oh right, I forgot they have Stranger Things and The Orville, I was thinking Stranger Things was Boom! Studios.

I have always been a big Superman fan. I have issues of both Action and Superman dating back to the seventies--with a big gap between 1994 and 2006. I have every issue from 2011 until today. The Rebirth story line was really well done, I thought--my biggest complaint about Bendis is that he just scrapped, in a single issue, everything the New 52 had done to make Lex and interesting and complex anti-hero.

Haven't got as far as Bendis yet, but that was one of the reasons I fancied reading the run.

I will include Super Sons and Trinity as they come in to play. I'll let you know how I get on.

Over at Bleeding Cool, one of the guys from my comics supplier Black Dog Comics in Berlin talks about the difficulty they've had with the international shipping from UCS. At the end is a glimour of hope as UCS responds with the promise to work out the problems.

As I've been talking about alot lately I've just started reading DC and Marvel superhero comics over the last few years...
I used to read DC and Marvel (though mostly Marvel aside from Batman) and Dark Horse back in the 80s and early 90s and then my interests and focus changed. I just started up again on some of the Batman "New 52" stuff and quite liked it.
So, now I get to revive one of my teenage interests, at least as far as Batman is concerned. I'm excited to check out the rest of New 52, the DC rebirth, and the pending Batman/Catwoman series by Tom King.

I read #s 5&6 of Aquaman since my last post, and there were both good. The beginning of #5, with Arthur falling into the middle of the desert was definitely an attention getter, and the message about "him" sinking Atlantis was intriguing.
I liked the focus on Mera in #6, you definitely don't want to mess with her. The little bit of backstory we got with her and her father was very surprising.

Anyone read Marvel Transformer comics back in the day? The continuity is still going. I read a prequel comic called Secrets and Lies which takes place before the first issue and it's pretty awesome. They replicate the art and coloring right down to the dots. A very worthy prequel.

In the newest industry-shaking controversy, creators, comics shops and comics news sites move away from Dynamite Entertainment over their support of Comicsgate projects. Right now, Mark Russell is the biggest name among creators to quit working with the publisher over this, though judging by her tweets, it's only a matter of time for Gail Simone to do the same.
Yikes, guess I won't be reading any more Dynamite Comics. Well, the only one I've read is Gail Simone's Red Sonja, so it's not much of a change.

Well, Dynamite seems not too happy about the bad publicity. First steps in cutting ties with Comicsgators.

I am not a big reader of Dynamite myself, but if Barrucci doesn't want his key creators to leave, he better do more than make the non-apology statement he made. It is as if he is clueless about what has pissed people off. Of course people pay with their money and if the majority of customers are white male incel/white supremacist types then I am sure their business will continue to chug along.

It's not just the readers and creators Dynamite has to consider here. Most of their best-selling titles are of licenced characters. Red Sonja, James Bond, Vampirella, the companies licencing these characters to Dynamite might also not be happy about such a publicity nightmare, and I'm pretty sure publishers like Dark Horse, Boom or IDW would be very happy to pick those up. Not to mention Marvel probably already trying to get Red Sonja back.

Nick Barrucci seemed to pretty much do the bare minimum, with pulling the cover. When I saw that he finally commented, I expected a big statement swearing to stop associating themselves with Comicsgate, and was shocked that all he did was pull the cover and say they were surprised by the reaction to it.
