JD's Comic Book Thread

Book of the Dead does sound like it might be highly interesting.

VALIANT is doing a unique variant chase with this series. Instead of variant covers, like are done 1:10, 1:25 etc VALIANT is embedding a variant chase mini-series within the Book of the Dead. The chase series is called Book of the Dead: Legend of the Geomancer.
For issue #1 the chase series ships 1:25
For issues #2-4 the chase series ships 1:10
As of now VALIANT says the chase mini will not be collected in any future trades and not released digitally.
So these are incentive books?
Exactly and likely to be limited and rare upon release since few LCS stores have high numbers of loyal dedicated VALIANT readers. Maybe VEI will have a buy back program for unsold copies but that's just speculation.

That's pretty disappointing. At least with the incentive covers you aren't missing out on anything. Making an actual story incentive based seems like a bit of a dick move, especially if it won't be offered in trade or digital form.

So does there being no digital release mean they won't be in the digital version of the main comic, or just that they won't be getting a standalone digital release?

Article at ValiantUniverse.com on the chase series Book of Death: Legend of the Geomancer. Not collected in the Book of Death trade nor released digitally.

A special, retailer-incentive limited series, all four issues of BOOK OF DEATH: LEGENDS OF THE GEOMANCER will be printed in limited quantities and will only be made available to retailers who qualify based on their orders of BOOK OF DEATH #1-4. Fans interested in obtaining this special incentive limited series should contact their local comics retailer to pre-order their copy before the May 28th initial order date for BOOK OF DEATH #1 (of 4).

But that hasn’t stopped Valiant reps from making a real sticking point of the series’ limited availability, indicating that it won’t be collected for the eventual Book of Death trade or released digitally via the usual providers. So if you want to get your hands on this book, better make sure to check that your local retailer is stocking it…because this chance may not come again…

If it shows up digitally it'll be because someone physically scans the pages and uploads them for pirating.

I know you're a big Valiant booster Captain Craig. What do you think of this move?

The reader in me isn't too happy about it because the crux of the promotion lies in your LCS to buy into this event like they might Convergence or Secret Wars. VALIANT readership fluctuates of course across the country but VEI has at best about 1% of the market place share--at best, on a good month.

I have a good relationship with my LCS owner. I explained the deal to him. His store has 3, THREE dedicated "I buy all VALIANT", hold file/box subscribers. He has nearly 300 subscribers. That means he has to order 75 copies of Book of Death #1 just to meet our wants for the incentive chase BoD:LotGeomancer. He has about a half dozen other VALIANT readers who fluctuate their titles and about another half dozen who may whimsically pick up the main title BoD. That would leave him with about 60 copies give or take---that's a lot of back stock.
He'd only have to pre-order 30 copies of issues #2-4 of BoD for us three dedicated "buy it all" folks to get the incentive chase. Which he says isn't an issue--it's that issue #1 that's the hang up.

I can appreciate the boldness of this incentive from a marketing standpoint. The reader in me is just a bit betrayed that I've got to go to such great lengths to try and get it at a price that isn't "an arm&a leg". Especially if it's not going to be collected at some point down the calendar in a trade.

Is anyone reading Savior from Image? I am really digging it so far. Descender is pretty good too.

"Descender" is outstanding. Expected nothing less from Lemaire. This is follow up to last year's outstanding "Trillium".

I read Chrononauts over lunch and it was a very satisfying final issue. The first issue of the series felt a little rushed to me but I really enjoyed the final three issues. If they can make the movie as good as Kingsman then it should be a blast.

Yeah I'm about to read the finale and the movie should be really interesting. Millar has said and I think it's been confirmed elsewhere that "Starlight" will be first, then "Chrononauts" and he's still working out the "Nemesis" film as well.

I'm really looking forward to a Starlight movie too. After reading the first issue I thought it would make a great movie so I was very pleased when I heard there was a deal to make one.

He just finished the scripts for Starlight II like five days ago too. Supposedly we'll get more background on the Broteans and Tantalus and maybe whatever happened to the old Queen.

Dark Horse has finally been added to Comixology. This morning they added almost 700 new comics, mostly from DH, including Hellboy and it's spinoffs., Sin City, a couple Halos, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Conan, Buffy and it's spinoffs, Avatar: TLA and Korra, the current Tomb Raider series, and a crap load of other stuff.

Sadly the Dark Horse app is not cross compatible with Comixology so you'll still need to keep it to read previous DH purchases.

Well the latest issue of Ninjak was a bit of a departure from the first three issues. I'm not familiar with Ninjak beyond what I've read in this new series but it felt a bit out of place. Still, it was an interesting read. I particularly liked the backup story.

I also read the second issue of "Resident Alien: The Sam Hain Mystery" and continue to be highly entertained by it. I think it would make a great tv series.

I took advantage of Comixology's Ghostbusters sale and picked up the first trade of the first volume of the ongoing series. I believe the sale is still going on if anyone else is interested. It freaked me out when I got on the Comixology app the other day, they totally changed the way your purchased books are collected.

Right. I hadn't thought of it that way but you are probably right. I just thought Roku's origin would be more on the technological side rather than the mystical.

Interesting I never noticed that angle to it. But you are right. I would assume that it's contrast to how Ninjak is a technological based character.

Hopefully they just give Ninjak's origin after this arc. The jumbled childhood flashbacks and secret agent backups don't seem to give much coherence to his character. None of the sociopathy you see in his childhood flashbacks are in his character now and he even goes out of his way not to kill people in the present arc.
