Jayru (JSnaith's) 3D Trek

The "neck" as it currently is on the ship:

The "neck" in isolation:

The "neck" started life as a primitive object, in this case a cylinder.

Ohhh... interesting. From that lower angle it still looks like it has fillets and a flat leading edge. Is your material very reflective? (Example, high Metallic value)

For example in the images below, the leading edge of the neck is rounded. But the left-side image's material is 10% Metallic and 90% Rough while the right-side image's material is 90% Metal and 10% Rough. The right-side has a strong reflective line like yours which could be easily mistaken for an edge.

Note that I'm not advocating for you to change your designs on the ship from a curved leading edge to a flat edge or vice versa. Just helping to clarify what we're seeing.

Yes, it is a highly reflective metallic material. SOP when I build Trek ships.

For further clarification, I use 3DS Max, and make all my own texture maps in PSP, I use a multi-material blend to achieve the "shine" along with custom metallic maps for each texture set.

I see that would explain it then. :) So something like a shiny TMP paint job?
Yes, it's something I played with when I first did the Ingram several years back, and refined as time has gone by. Creating a "pearlescent" effect for the TMP ships, which I tweak for other eras. Strictly speaking it's not needed on TOS or TNG ships, but it adds some depth to the ships. It's dulled down for TOS, but still "shiny" as it will catch and pick up on different scene light colours when I get round to doing pretty pictures.

It's complex - but works. Max is not the best application to achieve that look, but it's what I was gifted and use, so... make the best of it :-)

More later

Just a comment - I think the reflection catching scene material on the ships work for some of the images but these two images in the quote seem to leave the ships very dark when the background images imply that they should be well lit from above.

I'll see what I can do.

Yes, much better :techman: It matches better with the light hitting the moon/planet.

Not happy with the curve on the underside of the saucer - so am rebuilding that section. I can do better (an have in the past) -

I'd recommend looking at where the neck joins the saucer to see how the underside curves. You can see in the link below to a photo from the Smithsonian that it is a smooth transition from the edge to the inner curve.

Done

But what has been done? A whole new saucer section has been built - the height of the dorsal (neck) has been raised slightly, and that area retextured. A new secondary hull has been built.

Have I matched things exactly?

No.

And I have my reasons, as I stated in an earlier post I was going to fit things together logically. The model, when it was first built was for a smaller ship and then scaled up for the series proper. But this caused an issue with decks not lining up with windows and the like. Hence I have lined things up - yes, odd-sized decks would be a matter of course, but even considering that and doing some research, I feel comfortable with the layout I have done (windows-wise).

Purists may not be happy with me, but I'm not building ships for them, I build them for me and share them. I may play a bit further with this, now I have a feel for the era. But like all plans they are subject to the RL at the mo - a house move that is still ongoing, and my health.

Pretty pictures tomorrow, it has been a long day at the screen.

Comments welcome, more tomorrow :-)

I am fortunate that when my other half was working briefly in the USA, he found time to visit the Smithsonian and snap some pictures. Quite strange seeing the un-detailed side of the ship!

Yes, especially strange with the missing block on that side (visible in some forward facing shots). I got to see her in 2011 during a work trip :)

Oooo, 2010 for Dave. Also snapped the mothership from Close Encounters as well, especially the little R2-D2 on it, lol.

I know the Enterprise has been restored since then, and she looks even more grand. Sadly I am not allowed to fly so it's unlikely I will see her in person. Certainly when we lived in the USA, visiting the Capital was never on the cards.

My father disliked Florida for some reason, and my mother hates California, so never visited Disney either. But, living in Illinois, I did get to go Old Chicago theme park. But I'm casting back to the 70's here, lol.

Anyways, back to the main show!

More later.

Here's a question and a sort of conundrum:

I swore I would never do a Constitution, it's been done by everyone, and to be honest I didn't think I was up to the task of doing a good job. I've now done three - TOS, Phase II and my own take on what she could be like.

But here's the question; am I capable of doing the refit version? It's an era I have played in quite extensively and made one hell of a study of - but can I do the refit Constitution justice?

Dare I?

Hummmmmmm.

You dare. ;)

Do a Kitty Hawk version...

Slightly smaller in all dimensions...112 meter in diameter primary hull... 16.3 meter in diameter nacelles...warp factors 3.5/5.5/7.

But unable to sustain any speed above warp factor 3.5 for very long. Why? Slightly different equation. A bit off.

Where did I get the idea for this? Steve Long's Space Dock, SRM4 TOS rules.

I disagree with some of the figures...

In essence I think that the predecessor to the Constitution class should be around 90 percent of the size there of.

No Duotronics at all.

Multiple analog computers to handle each step...

The reason why I like Game stats is that there are fast and hard rules.

Been thinking about exploring a Kitty Hawk version of Star Trek Voyager. The Kazon would travel at warp 2.5/3.5/5.5.

But what broke the Time Barrier? Some short of high intensity battery...just enough to jump a ship up to high warp. Dilithium crystals any one?
