Star Trek: Discovery has beamed Jason Isaacs directly into the captain’s chair.
The Awake and OA actor has joined the CBS All Access drama in the series-regular role of Captain Lorca, the captain of the Starship Discovery, TVLine has confirmed.

I like the casting.

Ha, well, while I won't wish for him to go because I like that actor, you're probably right that he's a temporary character and Martin-Green will take over at some point. I'd say Captain Lorca enters the final final frontier in the cliffhanger season 1 finale.

First series with an alien Captain would be nice. Especially if in a franchise that explores the human condition, the focus has shifted away from senior crew first plots, to what's rumoured to be female and lower down the command structure. You could have an aloof and hard to read commander that you question the orders of, in that set-up.

Well, 'Lorca' is a Spanish name. Though I'd not be surprised were he an alien. Isaacs would make a great Vulcan.

Exactly. For Pete's sake, he played a major villain in the HARRY POTTER movies, which have only been seen by most of the world's population, and he's had had his own British detective series to boot.

He's a much a bigger name than, say, William Shatner or Patrick Stewart were at that point in their careers, when they were first cast in STAR TREK.

Interesting point on the 'well known' front, he's the first ever cast member of a new Trek series I've already met at a convention...
